One of the building contractors at the time, Leon Hardee told his wife, Claire about the mystery of the tombstones. Claire was in Bertha Lawrimore Uptegrove's Sunday School class and she told Bertha.   Ann died in 1894 and was buried in the Methodist Eppiscopal Cemetery across the street from the Present Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown, SC. A number of tombstones were removed from the cemetery in order to build a chapel on that site. Hers, her son's (William J. L. Uptegrove), and his wife's (Harriet Wisner Uptegrove) were among the tombstones that simply vanished.
