Notes
a. Note:   [Entire Family Tree for G.J. Hopeful.FTW] Captain William G. Uptegrove was both a carpenter and a mariner according to Horry County, SC census records. Census records have also indicated that he was born in South Carolina. However, as of November 2004, no other information about his birthplace or about his parents has surfaced.
In 1838, Capt. Uptegrove purchased approximately 1200 acres of land and swamp along the Waccamaw River in the Socastee area of what is now Horry County, SC. Part of his acreage included the Peachtree Boat Landing area which was the only ferry connecting the mainland with the coastal region up until bridges were built. Just think how wealthy his descendants would be today if the family had been able to hold on to it during the Reconstruction and the Great Depression!Captain William G.
