 Served in the 14th Kentucky Cavalry (Union Army), Company D, in the Civil War. Rank: private. Enrolled 18 Aug 1862; mustered in 21 Aug 1862 at Mount Sterling; mustered out 16 Sept 1863 at Maysville.
  Per Ex-Soldier's Pension Claim, date-stamped 8 July 1890, his post-office address was 482 Elm St, Cincinnati (same as son Sam's), but "Clark County, Ky" was at the top of the form, and the two witnesses, Matt Madigan and Phil Hodgkin, resided at Winchester [Clark Co], Ky.

 Height: 5 feet 8 inches; complexion: light; color of hair: brown ("dark" per his 1863 discharge document); eyes: blue ("grey" per discharge doc).
  Wife's name: Sadie Montague
  Places of residence since war: from 1863 to 1871, Greencastle, Putnam Co, Ind.; 1871-1879, Winchester, Clark Co, Ky.; 1879-90 various counties and states.
  Her served on a coroner's jury in Greencastle in January 1868.
  Greencastle Banner, 14 Sept 1871:
 "D. C. Montague was so unfortunate as to severely cut three of his fingers on a circular saw at Kimble, Sherfy & Co's, furniture factory, Monday afternoon."

 He appears in the 1883 and 1884 Louisville city directories as Clinton Montague, carpenter.

 Possibly homesteading in Laclede Co, Mo., in Oct 1897 per a story in the Springfield Leader & Press of 27 Oct 1897 re a Dewitt Montague being harassed.
  4 May 1898 pension document, above, written by him at age 74:
  "I was maried in 1856 Mt Sterling Ky. . . Record all destroid by fire . . . her maiden Catherine Barsons
  "Were you previously married? . . . I understand my second got a divorce All I suppose all is on record Stanton Powell Co Ky. I have one son his name Morgan Montague about ten years old her name Sadie Combes."

  1880 Census: D.C. Montague boarding with John and Allice [sic] Clinkenbeard in Blue Ball, Clark Co, KY; Kate (occ: seamstress) and Annie, Willie, and Charles living in Lexington KY. Can't find Samuel.
