Her family first moved from Hanover, Kansas to Enid, Oklahoma, and when Fern was 16 the family moved to Portland, Oregon. Fern graduated from Washington High School and Benhke Walker Business School. She was active in her church, where she met her future husband, Harold. They were married at her parent's home on December 21, 1921. When Harold was killed in a car accident, in 1934, Fern was left with three young children, ages 11, 8 and 5. She worked at Meier & Frank Dept Stores and retired from the the Internal Revenue Service, where she worked for many years. After her retirement she traveled to Arizonia and California for eight winters to spend time with her brother and his wife and her sister. She then moved into the Westmoreland Union Manor for 23 years before she died in 1997. She celebrated her 100th birthday with a party of 200 family and friends and passed away 2 months and 6 days later. (Jeanne Duncan Lockwood, her daughter)
