ARGONAUT OF '49 DIES - JAMES SIMPSON, OREGON PIONEER, PASSES AWAY: He Came West With the Gold Seekers, Settled in Oregon and Became a Prosperous Farmer. James Simpson, a California argonaut of 1849 and an Oregon pioneer, died at his home in Eagle Creek District, Clackamas County, Friday night, and the body was brought to the home of J.H. Patterson, 971 East Taylor Street, Portland, last evening. He was stricken with apoplexy (a stroke) two months ago on his Eagle Creek farm, and from that time until his death there scarcely any indication of consciousness. Mr Simpson was born near Edinburg, Scotland, October 18, 1831, and came to the United States when 9 years old. In the Spring of 1849, when a young man, he caught the gold fever, and joined a train of immigrants he started for California, where he remained for nine years. During this time he visited and mined in all the famous diggings of that state, and also British Columbia. In 1860 he came to Oregon and engaged in freighting to the mines of Idaho and elsewhere from Walla Walla. The Indians were on the warpath, and Mr Simpson had many narrow escapes from capture. In 1870 he returned to Illinois, where he was married. He afterwards resided in Nebraska for several years. Returning to Oregon in the early 1880's, he engaged in sheep raising in Gillham County, and at one time ranked with the leading sheep raisers of that part of the state. His family made their home at 1199 East Taylor Street, Sunnyside. Retiring from the sheep business a few years ago, Mr Simpson purchased a large fruit orchard on Eagle Creek. His wife and five children survive him: Mrs J.F. Eckerson, Canby, Or.; Mrs W.H. Duncan, Ruth and George Simpson, Eagle Creek, Or.; C.A Simpson, Condon, Or. The funeral will be held this forenoon at 11 o'clock from Sunnyside Congregational Church. Rev J.F. Ghormly will conduct the services. The internment will be in Lone Fir Cemetery.   Richard Simpson has James date of birth as 27 Feb 1830. (Richard Simpson June 2010)
In 1981, James Simpson's granddaughter, Alice Simpson Bellomo and grandson, Gilbert Simpson, wrote: "Among the families traveling west by wagon train in the late eighteen hundreds and some settling in Gilliam County, Oregon, were the James & Sarah Simpson family of Nebraska, with their two sons, Cass & George and two daughters, Catherine Belle and Ruth. Also coming by wagon was the Giles and Rebecca Parman family of Kansas with their two sons, George & Lloyd and three daughters, Sarah Helen, Julia & Ethelyn. The Parman's settled in Gilliam County, home steading about 2 miles west of Condon on what has always been known as the "Parman Ranch". The James Simpson family went to the Willamette Valley, settling in Portland, when Portland was still very rural with only a few homes and businesses."
Hay is James' actual given middle name. It is one of the older clan names and crops up but rarely. I think that we see James Hay so rarely because most of the family are only quoting other family members who have never done genealogical research, but just got their information through their elders and James probably was never addressed as "James Hay" except by his mother after a mishap. The Mormon files of persons posthumously baptized into the Mormon faith does have "James Hay Simpson" which was entered by some woman in Utah and her daughter. I don't accept all of their input after researching it. So far as I know the complete name is not duplicated in any Scottish records but I have never attempted to prove that. (Richard has James date of birth as 27 Feb 1830. (Richard Simpson June 2010)
James and Sarah left Nebraska and arrived in San Francisco. Aunt Ruth did not tell me the year or method. For sure it wasn't by covered wagon in the time period of railroads. From San Francisco they traveled by steamship to Astoria, Oregon and beyond. Somewhere I have the year he sold out in Nebraska but no other information. (Richard Simpson, 4 Mar 2012)
