Notes
a. Note:   Anson Hurlburt, one of the oldest, most successful and best known farmers of the town of Galen died at the home of his son, Willis A. Hurlburt, three and one-half miles south of this village last Saturday morning, shortly after midnight. Mr. Hurlburt was born in Fairfield, Vermont, July 9th, 1833. His mother died when he was a year and a half old and he was brought up by his grandmother. In March of 1858 he married Diann, daughter of Elijah Parrish, and for a few years lived on a farm on the east side of Sodas Bay. In 1865, Mr. Hurlburt bought of the late Henry Traver the 102 acre farm south of this village where he lived, raising his family meanwhile, for 50 years. That Mr. Hurlburt was a man of ability, great industry and alert probity is shown by the fact that when he bought his first farm he paid only $800 down and ran in debt for a balance of $5,000. He soon paid this indebtedness and besides built himself a new house. Deceased told the writer a short time ago that he only had but one winter's schooling, yet he was a man of intelligence, a sterling Democrat and a Loyal Methodist. Deceased is survived by one brother, Martin, 85 years of age, of Fairbury, Neb., one sister, Mrs. Alma Tork, 87 years old, of Cleveland, N. Y., one son, Willis A Hurlburt, one daughter, Julia, wife of Fred Cook, of this town, and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the home of his son at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. Rev. F.B. Durall officiating. (Clyde Herald, Wednesday, 7 Feb 1917)
