Note: According to the Book "Miss Aunt Nellie", the autobiography of Nellie Centennial Cornish, "Rose, a widowed mother of eight small children, left her tiny farm near Banffshire, Keith County, England, and set out to seek her fortune in America. She joined two other families, the Steeles and the McFees when they emigrated. She was a little woman with red hair, blue eyes and a sense of humor. They took up government land near Waukegan, Illinois." Note: Actually they came together, Rose and her husband Robert Simpson, came to the US and he is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois. Also it appears that the Steeles emigrated in 1828, first to Quebec, Canada and then in 1836 to New York before going on to Illinois. 1860 US Census: Libertyville Township, Cook County, Illinois Rosanna, 53, Scotland Robert Simpson, 23, Scotland Rosanna, 25, Scotland Jeanthe, 17, Illinois Andrew, 15, Illinois Home in 1870: Libertyville, Lake, Illinois (1 Jun) Rosanna Simpson, 65, Scotland, Owns Farm Jenny Simpson, 27, IL Andrew Simpson, 25, IL, Farmer 1880 US Census: Evanston, Cook, Illinois (1 Jun) Rose A. Simpson, 74, Scotland, Widowed Jennie Simpson, 33, Book Keeper Andrew Simpson, 31, Butcher The first mention of Rose Ann Lawson is her marriage to Robert Simpson in Turriff, Aberdene Shire, N.E. Scotland. There is no record of her birth. From the time of her marriage till leaving Scotland she lived in the N.E. Highlands. Place of birth is just N.E. Scotland. Her association with Keith town is that they moved there after their marriage and had their first three children in Keith. (Richard Simpson, 15 Jun 2013) Rose Ann's birth in Keith is logical as Lawsons were in the area. In the records Shire and County stand for different data. Old Parish Records were handwritten entries in the Shire Parish church records. So her entry would be "03, August, 1806, Keith, Banff Shire, Scotland". However they were recording Christening dates only. The actual birth date could be days or weeks before and unmentioned. Since there were no birth date records, parents passed them on orally. County birth records are county vital statistics and actual birth dates are recorded "date, place, county, Scotland." These rules apply in Scotland. (Richard Simpson, 19 Jun 2013) Lawson is thought to be a corruption of the Scandinavian Larson. Many Danes were settled along Scotland's N. E. coast. Some data on Rose Ann Lawson's grandchildren was copied from handwritten notes dropped off at the Libertyville Genealogical Society by various family menbers from time to time.
