He came to Michigan in 1835 or 1836 and bought a farm on Swan Creek, in Ash Township, Monroe County. Ada Parish Leonard says his DOB was 2/1/1799. This date was taken from the John Parish Sr. family Bible. Ada also said that he came to Mich. in 1835. (http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2798311&id=I126) I found my notes about Elias: I have been to the graves of John Parish (Solomon's grandson) who is our Civil War hero as well as Elias Parish's gravesite. Elias's resting place is Port Creek Cemetary in Monroe Co, MI. My dad told me that Elias married Elizabeth Vandervoort and his brother Ezra also married a Vandervoort - sister of Elizabeth. Elias Parish and Elizabeth Vandervort grew to maturity in their native state of New York and were married in Ontario Co, NY. They came to Monroe Co, MI in 1836 and took up their residence in an unbroken forrest in the twp of Ash. Elias built a log cabin as a shelter and home for his family and proceeded to clear and cultivate his wild land which in time he transformed into a valuable and highly developed farm, enriched with modern buildings and brought to an advanced state of general and varied productiveness. This whole region was wild and unsettled when they came hither, as they were among the first pioneers to locate here, and they still had to fear and face the savage foes of civilization, man and beast, and endure all the primative hardships and arduous trails of frontier life. Yet, in no way or degree daunted, they went to work with a will and stuck to the job until great and satisfying success crowned their efforts. On the farm which they carved out of the wilderness, they reared their family of eight children, 4 boys and 4 girls. They were devout and very serviceable members of the Wesleyan Methodist Church and the father helped to build the first church edifice in the twp of Ash.
