Note: Originally we had thought Jacob, pronounced "Yank-ob", was born in Kirchdorf, but later research indicated he was born in Oberhofen, Switzerland. (I am not sure where this came from - see letter at end of this page) It was also thought he and Mariana, pronounced "Mar-e-ah-na", were married in Langenbuhl, but again it may have been in Oberhofen also. They lived in a small area about 15 miles southeast of Bern towards Lake Thun. Kirchdorf is about 3 miles north of Gurzelen, where most of the children were born, Langenbuhl is about 3 miles south of Gurzelen and Lake Thun is about 5 miles west of Gurzelen. Oberhofer is located on the east shore of Lake Thun. Mariana's name is shown in Swiss records as Maria Anna, but dad says his mother, Bertha Mae, always told him her mother's name was Mariana or Marianna. Jacob drew his inheritance from his parents and immigrated to the USA in early 1881 where he settled in Fayette County, Iowa. Mariana was pregnant with Elise at the time and did not come with him until she and the children followed him in October, 1881. Baby Elise was born in 18 May 1881 in Langenbuhl, but died shortly after arriving in the US. Mariana apparently lived with her parents, in Langenbuhl, after Jacob immigrated to the US. Jacob and Mariana spent several years in eastern Iowa and then separated. Jacob and four of the children, Rosa, Alfred, John and Clara all remained in Iowa. Mariana with the other four children, Robert, Fred, Adolph, Bertha and Emma came to Oregon, by covered wagon, where they settled in West Chehalem, Yamhill County. Mariana's brother, Rudolf Wenger had come to Oregon earlier and had settled in the area, which is about 8 miles NW of Newberg, near the Yamhill-Multnomah County line. The area and road where the property is located is today named Ribbon Ridge. Rudolf Wenger's property was just north of the home of Francis Marion and Nancy Shepard-Vanderpool, the parents of Bertha's future husband, Marion, and Adolph's future wife, Rosa. There are 2 incidents of brothers marrying sisters in the Hertig family. In Iowa, John Hertig married Susan Lenahan and her brother, William Lenahan, married Rosa Hertig. In Idaho Bertha Mae Hertig married Marion Pomroy Vanderpool and in Oregon his sister, Rosa Vanderpool married Adolf Hertig. Jacob later came to Oregon and may have been in Idaho also, but dad says he does not remember him. My dad, Cedric Vanderpool, was Bertha Mae Hertig-Vanderpool's son. He had a photographic memory and could relate many details from his early childhood. Jacob may have also lived in Brush Creek, Fayette, Iowa, as there was a Jacob Hertig that appears in a census there.
