Notes
a. Note:   According to oral family history, either Robert or Henry Benefiel settled in Vincennes Indiana and helped write the Indiana State Constitution. However, the book "Centennial History and Handbook of Indiana" by G.S. Cottman, indicates that John Benefiel was one of five representatives sent from Knox County Indiana (Vincennes) to the Indiana Constitutional Convention of June 1816 at Corydon Indiana. The group was headed up by then Territorial Governor Jonathan Jennings, who later became the new state's first governor. The man described above is not that man! And, I have discovered that he was born in Virginia in 1761. He was justice of the peace in Sullivan County in 1826 and served as a member of the state House of Representatives from 1821 to 1822 from Sullivan County, Indiana. He died there in the town of Carlisle in 1835.
