Notes
a. Note:   Oral tradition from Elias Ridgeway and Elma Benefiel Gwinnup indicate that Robert was born in southeastern or eastern Kentucky. He weighed about 240 pounds. He is reputed to have fought indians with Daniel Boone and was at the battle of Tippecanoe. While in Kentucky, he married an indian woman. After she died, he moved to Indiana and remarried. He was a hard working farmer, but a real roughneck; he delighted on getting heavily drunk. He loved to fight, both in the ring and out. In this respect, he was very much like his brother Needham, who was renowned as a bare-knucked prize fighter. (Must be a family trait!) His lost arm is believed to be caused by one of the brawls when a chewed up thumb got gangrene. It is said that the arm was removed without anasthesia; he only groaned once when the saw stuck in the bone. Roy Davidson claims that both Robert and Daniel Boone were taken captive together at Detroit.
Robert could be the son of William Beddingfield, or he could be the son of Robert Benefield, born about 1750. There is reputed to be a will of a Robert Benefield born about 1729 that named sons Robert, James, and John. That Robert would have been the right age to be the father of Robert T. Benefiel. There is suspected to be another immigrant ancestor, a John Bennfield, who arrived in America about 1658. It is now assumed that his father is William "Will" Benefield of Wake County, North Carolina is his actual father.
