According to a story passed on by Elizabeth's granddaughter Elma Benefiel Gwinnup, Elizabeth's father was a ship's captain and lived on the Chesepeke Bay in Maryland. Years after her father's death the story was told that he was murdered by his crew for a chest of gold he supposedly kept in his cabin, and his body buried on an island somewhere in the West Indes.
The History of Caroline County, Md (1920); tells a story of the Rawlings School of Greensboro, Md being built at the foot of the lane to the home of Mrs. Rawlings in the year 1855, the year husband and former school teacher Henry Rawlings died. This school remained as such until a Mrs. Lowe bought the property, when the school was then called the Lowe School.
