Andrew Brown Jr (1803-1883 had a twin brother named Alexander who seems to just disappear after birth…but there is no record in Chatham Co, NC of his death. I think my GG great grandfather, named Alexander Brown (born about 1825 in NC, died in Lincoln or Drew Co, Ark about 1874) may have been the son of Andrew Brown Jr or his twin, Alexander, but have no proof. These Browns were related, in Chatham, Moore, Harnett and possibly other NC counties to McCormick, Cross, McLeod, Wicker, Hinton, Thomas, Marks, Harrington, Lawrence, McLeod, and others. Bill Brown – Richardson, Texas ******************************** Ancestry.com member posted in 2012: about his father: Archibald BROWN is the pioneer for this family in that we have been unable to go behind him in history. There are a number of BROWN families in Cumberland, Moore and Chatham Counties. Apparently Archibald BROWN related to none of these as no interconnection with them is visible. Also, there are two Archibald BROWNS, one in northeast Cumberland County and one on Lick Creek in Chatham County. Some have suggested that they were one and the same, moving from Cumberland County to Chatham County. However, there has been no discoverable connection between the two Archibald's. Let us spell out why these two cannot be the same. ====================================== Apparently, the Cumberland County Archibald BROWN came from Scotland before 1775. In THE DIRECTORY OF SCOTS IN THE CAROLINAS: 1680-1830, by David DOBSON, Buie Archibald BROWN emigrated from Scotland to American before 1775, settled in Cumberland County North Carolina. The reference given in SCOTTISH HIGHLANDER CARMICHAELS OF THE CAROLINAS, Washington, 1935. Abstracts of the Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Cumberland County NC, April 1779-1791, Volume II lists: 31 Jan 1788: P. 195: Suit No. 62, jurors include Archibald BROWN P. 196: Suit No. 29, same jury, A. BROWN P. 197: Suit No. 37, jury includes Hugh OCHILTREE, Archibald BROWN and Alexander MCIVER Archibald BROWN is listed as a juror on 2 Feb 1788 in suit no. 39 and on 2 May 1788 in suit no. 41. In the road assignments, "Daniel McNeill, overseer from Flea Hill to Brown's Ferry on Black River: Hands of Dan McNeill, Harmon Bass, John McNeill, Rice Bass, Neil McNeill, Archibald Brown, Duncan Malloy, and Daniel MiIntyre. Baptismal records of Bluff Presbyterian Church, Moore Co., NC, reflect the baptism of three children to Archibald BROWN and his spouse, Florence McNair. The children were Neil, 31 Jan 1795; Nancy, 15 Apr 1797; Florence, 4 May 1800; and Archibald, 23 Aug 1802. This clearly is not the Archibald BROWN of this account. ======================================= The Archibald BROWN from which we have descent is the Archibald BROWN who settled on Lick Creek in Chatham County, NC. It appears certain that he did not move from Cumberland Co. to Chatham County. The baptism records overlap the known records of Archibald BROWN and his wife Agnes. The first mention of Archibald BROWN in Chatham County is in CHATHAM COUNTY, NC COURT MINUTES, Vol. 3 by Poe Publishers. In Nov. 1790 the court stated, " William Pettysall appointed overseer of the road laid off by said Pettysall, leading by his plantation, as farr as the county line and the following hands work under him, to wit, Archibald BROWN'S hands, Pleasant WICKER, Burrly HESTER and Henry COLLIER, William JOHNSON." Then on 14 Aug 1792, the court ordered, "Andrew BROWN appointed overseer of the road the beginning year in the room of William JOHNSON {Johnson" marked out) PETTYSALL on the New Road by PITTYSALLS to Moore County line and the hands who worked under PITTYSALL work under him." These two entries of the Chatham County Court clearly places Archibald BROWN and his son ANDREW BROWN on Lick Creek. Also, the baptism records of Bluff Presbyterian Church place the other Archibald deep into Moore County. Thus, the Archibald BROWN who is our ancestor lived on Lick Creek in Chatham County, and has his own heritage. At this time, little more is known of Archibald BROWN. Most of the settlers in his region came from western Scotland, the Isle of Jura or from the Argyle region. One can only presume that Archibald came with the others. Old family history and records indicate that Andrew BROWN, son of Archibald, was born in Scotland. This would mean that Archibald married and had his two children in Scotland before his emigration. This would place his arrival after 1755 and before 1775. All evidence points to the truth of this assertion. The Will of Archibald BROWN was probated in Chatham County in May 1796. ======================================= 1790 census North Carolina Chatham County, Hillsborough District 1st # free white males 16 year upwards and head of families 2nd # free white males under 16 years 3rd # free white females and head of families 4th # all other free persons 5th # slaves This census is from Microcopy No. T-498 Roll 2 Brown, Archebell..............................2-1-3-0-4 2 males over 16 1 male under 16 3 females and head of families 4 slaves =======================================
