"Patrick O'Quin Family History
Patrick O'Quin was born either January or June 5, 1750 in Ireland. Some records differ on his month of birth. He arrived in the colonies as an indentured servent. Patrick's last name was spelled "Quin" in the ships records. He was indentured to one Michael Simpson on April 22, 1772, in the Mayors court in Philadelphia Patrick served in the Revolutionary War in the Virginia First Artillary for the entire length of the war. It is believed that he served in the stead of his indenturer, Michael Simpson, which was a common practice at the time, and by doing so had his term of indenture terminated. His Army duty was listed as matross, A matross is a soldier who assists artillery gunners in loading, firing, sponging and moving the guns. He was awarded 200 acres of land after the war, on July 28, 1783, and was listed in the 1790 Census of Sampson County, North Carolina as Patrick O'Quin.
Patricks wife's name was Elizabeth (Hurley?) Elizabeth was also an indentured servent who was indentured to Elizabeth Sawyer, also in the Mayors Court at Philadelphia, also on April 22, 1772. Records do not show if they were married before or after coming to America. However, as indentured servants were rarely allowed to marry, and given the exact same date of indenture, Patrick and Elizabeth were possibly married before leaving Ireland.
Patrick died in 1806. After Patrick's death, Elizabeth married Hardy Holmes on August 24, 1808. Elizabeth died in Wayne County, North Carolina. "

Patrick O'Quinn's will dated 23 Nov 1751 in Northampton Co., NC proven Feb 1752 and names sister, Chairty (who married Henry Glisson), lists no wife nor children in his will.
Wiley O'Quinn married to Martha "Mattie" Elizabeth Dunford and Abigail Coleman. He was the son of Patrick and Elizabeth Hurley(?) and was born in 1799. Wiley probably had at least 9 sisters as per the 1790 census of Sampson Co., NC. Wiley is later found in the 1850 Wythe Census as Wiley Gwinn.
Edmond O'QUIN who married Catherine WILES, daughter of Stephen WILES and Rachel STEELMAN, in 1829 in Surry County, NC. Catherine married second Ansley PAUL, third James REECE. Edmond O'QUIN was born about 1808 in NC; died about 1843 in Lincoln Cunty, TN. The family is found on the 1830 Surry County, NC census; on the 1840 Lincoln County, TN census; on the 1860 Laclede County, MO census. Edmond and Catherine were the parents of seven known children:

I am grasping for straws on our Edmond. If anyone out there has access to the Census records, maybe you can locate them. After Catherine arrived in MO we have more info on the family. We know that Edmond died in abt 1843 in Lincoln Co TN possibly around a Mullberry Creek....

He married Faith Grice b. 1773 SC and they were in Houston, GA by 1850 Census: Issue: Mary b. 1797 SC, Female b. ca 1803, Nancy Ann b. 1808, Son b. ca 1811, Female b.ca 1813. Ezekiel may be the son of Daniel O'Quinn. Ezekiel received a Rev.Land Grant in GA. He may be a brother to John O'Quinn and the son of Bryant O'Quinn of NC 1745-1760.
Elijah O'Quinn b. 1790-1810 in NC. He married Mary Edwards and lived for a time in Barnwell District, SC where his sons James B. O'Quin was born in 1825. It is said that Elijah and his wife were killed by Indians during the Seminole War. Elijah served in the Florida Militia during the 2d Seminole War (1835-1837). Elijah is the brother of Silas O'Quin. Possibly children of one of the original emigrants, Bryant (Briant) or Daniel. They left Sampson County, NC before 1790 and went to Kershaw, SC. All of the original O'Quinn's got land grants... see Cavaliers & Pioneers of VA. Bryant got a great deal of land for paying passage for others to come into the Colonies.

Alfred O'Quinn of Sampson, NC had a son, Patrick O'Quinn (O'Quin). Alfred's wife is named Sarah. In 1850 Alfred appears in McDowell Co., NC. Alfred would have born in the late 1700's. Alfred and Sally appear in the 1860 and 1870 census for Sampson, NC.
Elijah O'Quinn in 1820 Bertie, NC census married a Mary or Ann McClellan. Other O'Quinn's are listed as well.
Hardy O'Quin b. ca 176? in NC moved to TN in the early 1800's and is listed in several census in Humphreys Co., TN. He was a son of Alexander Oquin of Sampson or Robeson, NC. Dates of Alexander's birth and death are guessed to be 1732-1798. He is listed with a Martha in 1757 tax list of Bertie, NC. Hardy was in Robeson Co., NC in the census of 1800 along with brothers Ezekiel and Tarlor. He had another brother, John who married Grace Spivey and moved to MS in 1814. He had a sister, Charity O'Quin listed in the 1790 census of NC. She is listed as head of household and perhaps never married. She had a sister named Patience who was living in that household along with her son, Silas O'Quin. See "O'Quinn Cousins, by the Dozens."

"Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia" lists Silas O'Quinn as the son of Alexander O'Quin. Alexander lived in various parts of NC including Bertie, Sampson and North Cumberland Counties, NC. He is listed in Cumberland Co., NC in 1800. Alexander may be the son of Patrick O'Quin as they lived in the same area. In "North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register" a will of Patrick O'Quin dated 1745 in which Martha O'Quinn is listed as his executor.
Book "O'Quinns from Ireland to Texas" by the late Dallas Patrick O'Quinn of Austin, TX, a record of Ezekiel O'Quin shows he was born 18 Feb 1781 in NC and died 22 Apr 1822 in Rapides Parrish, LA. He was a son of John O'Quin and Grace Spivey. In 1795 he moved to SC and married Mary Brockston b. 178? and d. Jul 1827. In 1809 he moved to TN and in 1810 to Wilkinson, MS and in Dec 1815 he moved to Bayou Beuf, Rapides Parrish, LA. He was a hard shell Baptist preacher and established one of the first Baptist churches west of the Mississippi River. He had a son, Rev.John O'Quin, b.8 Jan 1808.
Silas O'Quin of Robeson, NC had uncles: John, Hardy, Ezekiel and Tarlor and aunts: Charity, Martha and Rachel. It is believed that their father was Alexander O'Quin b. ca 1730 d. ca 179?. Alexander also had a daughter, Patience, who bore a son out of wedlock and he was named Silas O'Quin b. Jul 24, 1789.

Tarlor was a son of Alexander. Tarlor had siblings: John, Hardy, Ezekiel, Charity, Martha, Rachel and Patience.
Bryant O'Quinn's father, Bryant Sr. was married to Patience Carter. His estate was filed at Bertie Co., NC in 1736.
NOTES REGARDING TARLOW (TARLOUGH, TARLER) OQUIN - (believed to be) THE ORPHAN IRISH BOY. ALSO SEVERAL EARLIER COLONIAL IMMIGRANTS NAMED O'QUIN, (Oquin.)
It is a matter of record that there were 3 or 4 Oquin males in the Virginia/ North Colonies after 1684 when Bryan Oquin transported 11 persons to the upper parish of Nansemond, VA. It would be so great to know the names of those 11 persons! We do have records of Daniel, Patrick and Bryan Oquin in Bertie Co. NC in the very early 1700s. I do not know if the Bryan who came in 1684 is one of these, nor how they may have been related.
I do think Tarlow, (Tarler, Tarlough,), is indeed my first American ancestor, and that he was born about 1698 in Northern Ireland, perhaps near Londonderry. His parents may have been James and Margaret Keane Oquin. They must have died while he was still a young lad; if we are to believe the legend; and that he came as an indentured servant to North Carolina about 1710. Also, that he and the orphan Scots girl who came with him, fell into the hands of an old man and his wife in North Carolina who abused them. So, they ran away, he to VA. She to _______?. He must have known about other Oquin cousins in Nansemond Parish VA who had been living there for several years. It seems he grew up there and in his early 20s he re- met and married the Scots lass, and they then lived in a place called "RUNAWAY MEADOWS". He also received land grants; viz:
July 11, 1719 - 227 acres in upper Parish Nansemond Co. VA
July 12, 1722 - 320 acres given by William. Eason of Albemarle Co. NC
Aug. 4, 1723 - 300 acres granted in Bertie on south side Morratuck River (now Roanoke River)
Feb 15, 1726 - 300 acres plus another 300 acres was sold by Tarlough Oquin to Francis Pugh. The first site was the dwelling of Tarlow and his wife Elizabeth.
Aug. 2, 1743 - Three entries which detailed the transfer of 422 acres from Tarlow Oquin to O'Quin Best, Peter Best and Tarlor Phillips. ? Could these have been the sons in law of Tarlow and Elizabeth Roundtree Oquin?
Can you agree with my belief that Tarlough Oquin was the orphan Irish boy who came to America and that his girl acquaintance was named Elizabeth Roundtree? And that they had a son named Alexander Oquin? If you can agree, we are most likely kin, if you cannot agree, please let the whole clan know what we do not yet know!

Land grant in Nansemond Co (now City of Suffolk) 26 Apr 1684: 550 acres to Bryan O'Quin (Oquin) on 16 Jun 1714. 200 acres to Bryant Oquin 11 Jul 1719. 227 acres to Thurlo on land adjoining land belonging to Daniel O'Quin. This area of VA is just north of Bertie Co., NC.
Andrew O'Quinn from Ireland to Bee, VA. His brothers: Patrick and William also arriving but settling in NC, TN or KY. Andrew had a son, John O'Quinn who had sons: John, George and Rice.
Owen's second wife, Cynthia Ann Bolen was said to be first cousin to Elizabeth O'Quinn.

I think that this is the same family as the James in MO in 1860. I know that the ages don't all match and the places of birth are different on some, but a census isn't always accurate. I don't know why my great-grandfather wouldn't be listed on the 1860 MO Census. But I do know that my great-great-grandparents were Mary Freeman and James E. O'Quinn. I have a copy of their marriage license.
