 DEATH: 1 Aug 1879 (aged 31)
BURIAL: Leach Family Cemetery in Clayton, Johnston County, North Carolina, USA
 MEMORIAL ID40215820
Nancy Temperance Leach was born 1847 in the Cleveland Township area of Johnston County, NC, the 6th of 10 known surviving children (4 boys/6 girls) born to wealthy physician and planter, Dr. James Thomas Leach and his wife, Elizabeth Willis Sanders.
She was the paternal grandchild of John Thomas Leach II and Susanna Parham; and gr-grandchild of Dr. John Thomas Leach I and Elizabeth Winnants, all of Johnston County. Her great grandfather was the first of the Leach family to settle in Johnston County, having come from Mecklenburg Co, VA, and established his plantation "Leachburg". On her mother's side, she was the maternal grandchild of wealthy planter Col. John Sanders II and his (2nd) wife, Mary Willis Boddie of "Sanders Grove" plantation in Smithfield
Nannie was 21 years old when she married 24-year old Charles Edward McCullers on June 17, 1868. Charles was from the Wake County branch of McCullers. He was the son of Joseph J. Lane McCullers and Willa Richardson Nance of Wake County and a descendant of Col. John McCullers and Mary Jones of Johnston County. Their son, Matthew Jones McCullers, left Johnston County and started the branch of McCullers found in Wake County.
The young couple farmed in the Swift Creek area of Wake County and became parents to 3 known children: James Thomas McCullers (1869-1869), Elizabeth Sanders McCullers (1872-1872) and Thomas L. McCullers (c. 1877).
Nannie died young in 1879 at age 32, and was buried in the Leach family cemetery. Her widowed husband later remarried and died in 1914. He and his second wife, Henrietta, are buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. Her only surviving child, Thomas L. McCullers, lived with his father in Raleigh until his death in 1914. He was a partner in the grocery firm of Johnson & McCullers on Fayetteville Street, Raleigh. He was still single in 1920, and it is not known if he ever married.
