Notes
a. Note:   Captain "Plunk" Shearin Posted 04 jul 2014 by jimjenkinsca
How Thomas Warren Shearin got the name Capt. Plunk
In the Civil War, one of the most fearful sounds was the minnie ball striking nearby. Because of the difference between the speed of sound and the speed of the ball, often the "plunk" would come before the report.
"Sutherland writes in his book, and by about 4:30 p.m. life escapes him as he mumbles about his wife and children back in Maryland. “Federal lead flies everywhere, piercing clothing and plunking into bodies. Plunk; plunk: the sickening sound of bullets lodging into human flesh,” ....
Another explanation is that pickets and sharpshooters would "plunk" at the enemy.
Whatever the background, the appellation was, like the Captaincy, added because of the war.

I've been researching the Stainback Family of North Carolina & Virginia for over 25 years. My Mother....Lona Faye Stainback Rathbun (b.1946)......grew up in Littleton, NC. I am also descended from JOHN PERRY REID & MARY ELIZA SHEARIN. John Perry Reid was a son of Jesse Arthur Bineum Reid & Nancy Lilly Neal. Mary Eliza Shearin's mother was Susan Myrick, daughter of Raleigh Myrick Jr. She was raised as a Shearin, but it's doubtful that Thomas Warren "Captain Plunk" Shearin was her father. Mary Eliza Shearin was born in 1851......Thomas W. Shearin and Susan Myrick were not married until 1858..... 7 years later. I've heard it whispered over the years that her father was actually an "Ira Egerton"....but no proof.
My Grandparents: LAWRENCE EARL STAINBACK & BRADIE CLEVELAND HEUAY of Littleton, NC
Nancy Lilly Neal was the daughter of Thomas S. Neal and Nancy Thompson who were married in 1822 in Warren Co., NC.
Anyone researching these surnames....please shoot me an email!!!
  Thanks,
 Charlie Rathun
