Norman and Ruth eloped in secret before he was drafted into the Army and went off to WWII from 1941-1945. Nannie moved out to San Diego, CA to live with her sister, Lillian, for about two years and for some reason the marriage was annulled before Norman’s return in 1945. She said they wrote a while but correspondence stopped and she believed him to be dead.
Norman returned in 1945 and soon remarried to another woman in 1946. Nannie told no one in our immediate family of this marriage until very late in her life, around 1997 or 1998, not even her children. Her sister Lillian Gossett Livingston must have known, as the 1940-41 San Diego, CA census has her as Mrs. Ruth Gossett in their household but the last name McDonald left off. She didn’t meet or marry my grandfather, Tolbert, until late 1940’s, after she returned to North Carolina to take care of her sick parents who died of tuberculosis within 5 days of each other in 1948. She married my grandfather about that time, as their son Ronnie was born in March of 1948.
She said my grandfather, Tolbert, knew about her prior marriage to Norman, but he did not like it discussed. Late in her life, she told me about Norman, said she was happy she married my grandfather but that she thought of Norman and reflected on their friendship / courtship and hoped his life had been happy.
It was only recently discovered through ancestry research and DNA connections that Norman Thomas McDonald (1st husband) and William Tolbert Brown (2nd husband) shared the same grandparents, "Mack" C. Thomas and Sarah Margaret Sloan, therefore both of her husbands were 1st cousins to each other. My little Nannie never told me that part. God love her <3
