Note: ett, and said they had a very close marriage and bond, and that there was nothing that her father would not do for her mother out of his love and devotion to her; and vice versa. Ruth said that her mother, Lola, was soft-spoken and kind, and described her "as close to a saint as a person could possibly be". Ruth moved to San Diego, CA in 1940 to stay with her sister, Lillian, to help care for Lillian’s young child during while her sister was experiencing a difficult pregnancy, as Lillian’s husband was in the military and often away or deployed. Ruth moved back to North Carolina about 1941 and soon after cared for her parents during their prolonged illness of tuberculosis. She said that her father died on January 20th, of 1948, and though they did not tell her mother, Lola, to avoid upsetting her in her fragile state, she passed away just five days later on January 25th, 1948. Ruth said she truly believed her parents had such a loving bond that one just couldn’t live without the other. Ruth was married to Tolbert Brown and in the last trimester of her first pregnancy at the time of her parents death, and gave birth to their first child, Ronald “Ronnie” Brown in March of 1948.
Lola and John had many children during their life together, but Ruth said that Lola never truly got over the untimely death of her 18 month old infant daughter in 1915, Virginia, whom she lost after a two week attack of gastritis following a longer history of colitis. Lola would cry when speaking of her, always being afraid that it was something she fed her that caused her daughter's gastritis and subsequent death. As a result, Lola was overly cautious and careful to ensure all food was thrown away before it was close to expiring. Modern medicine and research reveals that though foods can trigger gastritis, it was the likely the diagnosis of colitis that was the ultimate factor in Virginia's death, in which Lola could not have caused by feeding her something with a questionable expiration date.
