James Jr. was a farmer/ plantation owner. He married Rebecca A. Crews, and they had four children, William A Cheatham, Sarah who married Albert C. Parham, James Theodore Cheatham and David Thomas Cheatham. He is said to have died of a broken heart as a result of the war.
