GIDEON1 CREWS was born 1730 in Hanover, VA, and died October 16, 1815 in Pleasant Farm, Oxford, Granville, NC. He married JEMIMA WICKER Abt. 1770 in Hanover, Hanover Co., VA. She was born 1739 in New Kent Col, Hanover, VA, and died January 1826 in Pleasant Farm, Oxford, Granville, NC. Notes for GIDEON CREWS: MARRIAGE - "The Wicker/Whicker Family" c. 1770 moved to Granville Co. NC D: Oct 1815 Pleasant Farm, Oxford, Granville, North Carolina DAR Lineage Book, April 1932, Vol. 66, P. 249 Served in the 6th Virgina Battalion of Continental Forces commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Hendrick. He was a private. Patriot, signed Oath of Allegiance, and solder, North Carolina. References for Military Record: Vol. War 4, p 140 Vol. (6VR)W.D. p 124, 8, 135, 2 Information from the DAR application of Mrs. Berverly Timberlake, DAR #557394 Jemima Whicker was Gideon's 2nd wife. Nothing is known of his 1st wife. His 8 known children were by Jemima. Gideon signed Oath of Allegiance to State of NC 30 May 1778; was pd. for army service as a soldier. His musket has been kept in the museum at Guilford Battleground. (Source: DAR notes). He made his will in Granville Co. NC 16 Oct. 1815. Was proved in Nov. Court 1815. He willed to wifeJemima. The inventory for both was presented 6 Dec. 1815 by his sons, Gideon and James as Executors. Researcher Randy Crews says that although the inventory was presented does not necessarily mean Jemima was dead as records show she made her will 12 Dec. 1825 & it was proved Feb. Court 1826. Randy believes Jemima was Gideon's only wife. (See notes for wife, Jemima Whicker.) Photo-copy of Gideon's will in possession of Hazel Knight. Gideon Crews was buried at Minor Cemetery, Granville Co, NC. (Information provided by Hazel Deane Wicker Knight) Gideon, along with his brother James, enlisted in the Revolutionary Army on 9 March 1716 in Buckingham Co. VA which is located in the upper reaches of the James River. Since rivers were the main method of transportation in those days, we believe that James (and brothers Gideon and Walter and sister, ?) descended from the Crew(s) who settled at the mouth of the James River. It is possible that James' father was Walter Crew. But, we will never know because the Buckingham Co. courthouse was one of some 190 courthouses deliberately burned by the union army in a conscious attempt to destroy the cultural and civic life of the Southern States. Yes! Union soldiers, under the command of General George Stoneman, burned the courthouse in Buckingham Co. a few months before the end of the War of Union Aggression. He also burned several other courthouses in Virginia, including the one at Bristol, Virginia. Similar atrocities were committed in some 190 counties throughout the south as part of a deliberate plan by the Union Army, under General Ulysses S. Grant, to destroy the economic, social and legal fabric of the Confederate States of America. These criminal acts were approved by Abraham Lincoln and his Secretary of War, William Stanton. After the war, Lincoln and Stanton ordered the hanging of about 10,000 Confederate soldiers and sympathizers. Most of these murders were carried out in the Washington Navy Yard, where I worked before my retirement. The museum there, has pictures of some of this slaughter, including one gallows that could hang ten people at a time! The hanging of men, women and children went on, day and night for over two years. (Elmer A. "Bud" Houser) James and Gideon moved to Knox Co. Tennessee in 1796, where the name was corrupted to "Cruze." (Source: Elmer A. "Bud Houser -bud-nan@@juno.com) Notes for JEMIMA WICKER: Pat Ray had sent me a xerox copy of "McCoy-Crews Families and Descendants ca 1650-1976", "compiled at Amarillo, Potter Co TX by Margaret Crews Norman" and it states that "Jemima (Gemina or Jamina) Wicker" was one of 8 ch of Mary Hester and Thomas Wicker. : PJPF23A@@Prodigy.com (MRS Joanne R Black) ------------- Death Date: Will probated GRANVILLE CO Feb. Court Book 21/106 or 10/98 Other : DAR Lineage Book, April 1932, Vol. 66, P. 249 DAR Lineage records. Jemima died after her husb. Both Gideon & Jemima's inventories were presented 6 Dec. 1815 according to "The Bell Book", pg. 403. Other sources including Dr. Wicker's book, 1st edition, pg. 46 says Jemima died Granville Co., 1826. Jemima's will was written 12 Dec. 1825, proved Feb. Court 1826, Granville Co., NC. Inventories presented does not necessarily mean one is deceased at that time. Jemima buried as is Gideon, on the homeplace of land purchased in 1806. See "Historical Data of Granville County" as it appeared in the Oxford Public Ledger, Oxford, Oxford, NC newspaper dated 25 June 1929. It states this land was the homeplace of his father-in-law, Thomas Wicker, Sr. however, his father-in-law was Benjamin Whicker as established by Dr. Wicker in his book, as well as other sources. The land was purchased by Gideon from Daniel & Co. who had purchased it from Peyton Wood. Thomas Wicker had sold it to Daniel & Co.. Dec. 1795 Thomas Wicker (son) sold 20 acres to Gideon Crews. (See Dr. Wicker's book, pg. 43, 1st edition for more details of land transfers.) The Bell Book,pg. 404, says Jemima was the dt. of Thomas & Mary (Hester) Whicker but DAR lineage record says dt. of Benjamin Whicker & 2nd wife as does Dr. Wicker's book agrees with the DAR lineage record. Jemima Wicker is buried at Granville Co, NC. Notes for JAMES CREWS: (Source: Thomas Randolph Crews, " Regarding James Crews (2 Jul 1785 - 28 Sep 1875), son of Gideon and Jemima, I have him recorded without a middle name. All of the Granville County, NC wills, deeds, etc. that I have seen show him just as James Crews. Also, I have personally seen his headstone at the Salem Methodist Church and it reads "James Crews."), James Crews lived to be some four score years and ten and was a famous man in his community and church. He was one of the founders of Salem church, donated the land on which it stands, and was the leading member of its congregation for many years. He was the son of Gideon Crews, who signed the oath of allegiance to North Carolina in 1778. In 1806 James Crews married Sarah Earl, daughter of John Earl, whose father came from England and was followed by his sweetheart, Mollie Watts (who was a near relative, perhaps a sister, of Isaac Watts, the hymn writer). The blushing maiden was met on the boat by her old swain and a parson, and when she set foot on the soil of the New World she was a married woman. The name Earl seems to have died out in this county as a surname, but is preserved as a Christian name by some of the descendants of the English-American couple. Notes for BENJAMIN WILLIS HICKS: Released from prison after Oath of Allegience Sketches:: "My father, in his narration, related...When he first mentioned the subject to her (Miss Crews), an opportunity for which he found it very difficult to arrange, she declared "it can never. Our folks are opposed to it." In a few minutes he was on his horse and gone. Before very long he was married to Miss Susan Hester who, in about 15 months, was a victim of pneumonia. Some two or three years after, my father hinted the subject of marriage again to my mother but rather slightly, for he did not intend to be kicked so hard again, and she said "perhaps". They were married October 1854, and reared seven children and lived together happily 43 years. Long before her death my mother joined the Methodist Protestant Church at Rehoboth. I have always thought that church separation incident created a coolness between the Crewses on one side and the Harrises and the Hickses on the other, that almost prevented me from living in this world.
