Note: Name: John MINNIS Sex: M Birth: 11 FEB 1755 in VA Death: 20 NOV 1836 in Orange, NC _UID: D08612241B662E43B66B2599E117A60F0A13 Note: John Minnis was born in Virginia on 11 February 1755. He migrated toOrange County, NC, in 1763. At the age of eight he probably needed some help. A James Minnis acquired land in Orange County in 1760. Was he the father, brother, or some other relative of John? A clue may be that John named his first son James, but this is hardly conclusive as to relationship. James appeared in Orange County court records frequently from 1763 and John from 1777. John joined the militia in 1771 in David Hart's company as a private and fought in the battle at Alamance, NC, on 16 May 1771, in the War of the Regulation. Some say this was the precursor of the American Revolution but then this disturbance was against the local politicians not the parliament. In the fall of 1775 John enlisted for six months and after serving in the NC militia returned to his plow. From 1776 until 1781,John volunteered in the NC militia some seven times for a total of 21 months and two weeks. Most of his service was spent in suppressing the Cherokees and the Loyalists (backers of the King), of whom there were many in the back country. John was a farmer and land trader. He married Levinia Ross, daughter of James Ross and Margaret Kennedy. He had the misfortune of losing his eyesight in about 1796 and because of his war service and infirmity was declared an invalid under NC law. Their children were James who married Lucy McDaniel, Jane who married a Taylor,William who married Tempe Forkner, Lavinia, Margaret who married Levi Gant, and Allen who married Susannah Morgan.
