Dr. Frank P. Hobgood (obituary from a clipping - paper unknown)
Oxford and Granville county and thousands of homes throughout the State were shocked when the news went about on Sunday last at the death of Dr. Frank P. Hobgood, founder and president of Oxford College. He passed away at 10:15 o'clock Saturday night at St. Luke's Hospital in Richmond following and operation ten days ago. He suffered a stroke of paralysis during his last hours. His affliction was pronounced to be similar to that of the late President Wilson, and he passed away as if falling to sleep. His two sons, Col. F. P. Hobgood, Jr. of Greensboro and Dr. J. E. Hobgood of Thomasville, who kept vigil for several days, were with him when his spirit ascended.
  Remains Lie in State.
The remains of Dr. Hobgood reached Oxford at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon and were conveyed to Oxford College. Hundreds of people in all walks of life called at the College while the body lay in state. As a mark of esteem there was no services Sunday night at the Oxford Baptist Church, of which Dr. Hobgood was the senior member of the board of deacons. All places of business in Oxford were closed during the funeral hour.
  The Immediate Survivors
Dr Hobgood is survived by a devoted wife who was Miss Mary Royal of Wake Forest. She remained at the bedside in Richmond until the doctors advised her to return home to rest. There were six children born to this union, namely: Mrs. F. W. Hancock, Mrs. Beverley S. Toyster, of Oxford: Col. F. P. Hobgood of Greensboro, and Dr. J.E. Hobgood of Thomasville, who survive. The other son, Royal Hobgood, a most promising young man died some years ago at the age of 21. Mis Carrie Hobgood, the youngest daughter, who was greatly adored by her father, died during last Christmas week. Eleven grandchildren and seventeen grand-children survive.
  (description of the funeral)
  Brief Sketch Of the Deceased.
Dr. Hobgood was born in Granville county in 1847. His preparation for College .was at Horner's School. His studies were interrupted by the War Between the States, during, the last 6 months of which he served in the Junior reserve brigade. Resuming his studies in 1866, he graduated in 1868 with the A. B. degree from Wake Forest college, being valedictorian of his class, and he was the captain of the first baseball nine ever organized at Wake Forest. Dr. Hobgood's career as a teacher began in 1869 when he became principal of a boy's school at Reidsville, a position he held successfully for two years. In 1871 he moved to Raleigh and became president of the Raleigh female Seminary. Dr. Hobgood founded Oxford. College in 1880, which has continued without break for J4 years. More than 5000 young women attended the college during that period. Dr. Hobgood's ideals were high, and he gave much of his time to the religious training of the pupils as well as to the practical, useful side of life. Several positions of honor, trust have been occupied by President Hobgood. For six years he was chairman of the board of education in Granville. For one term he was president of the North Carolina teachers' assembly. For eight years he has been a trustee of the State university at Chapel Hill. Wake Forest College, his alma'mater, some years ago conferred upon him the L. L. D. degree,. Dr Hobgood was a religious worker and often stressed the importance of the Sunday school. He was moderator of the Flat River Baptist Association for ten years....He was identified with the Thomasville Baptist Orphanage from its inception, 40 odd years ago, first as a member of the visiting committee, then as trustee, then as president of the board of trustees. His fidelity to duty is shown in the remarkable fact that in all the years of his service as trustee of Wake Forest college and of the orphanage, he missed but one annual meeting of each of these bodies, both coming at a time when he was in a hospital.
