Note: From VAAMHERS-L Archives-Rootsweb Joseph CARTER - 4 SEP 1736 Prince William Co. VA - 16 AUG 1808 in Rye Cove, Russell co. VA Note: death date from tombstone; birthdate from his father, Peter's bible. See also will below. The part of Prince WIlliam county where Joseph grew up became part of new Fauquier County when it was created from Prince William in 1759. Joseph Carter was a private in the first company of militia known to have been organized in the new county, in 1761 (see Fauquier county, Va Court Minutes 1759-1763, p. 155). [Forget all the fussy details - the Regiment was mustered at Fauquier County! This proves Peter in Fauquier - Amen to that. Note the writers emphasis on Morgan]. Thomas Harrison took the oath as the new County Lieutenant at a court held 23 April 1761 and on William Edmonds' receiving his commission as captain of militia the following 29 August, Harrison furnished Edmonds with a muster list of the officers and men who were to constitute his company. Joseph Carter's name is on this 1761 list -- as were the names of William Norris, William Russell, Thomas Porter, and four Morgans (names intertwined with the Carter family). Captain Edmond's 70 men were with the Virginia troops who fought in the French and Indian War. Joseph Carter was 25 years old. Joseph married ca 1765/70 and enlisted for a 3 year term on 22 August 1777. War Department folder 231, 1 and 337, 1 (11 Virginia Regiment), folder 1 and 337 (15 Virginia Regiment); W.T.R. Saffell, Records of the Revolutionary War (1858), pp 267-8; National #652 Society of the Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge National #455902 DAR supplement. IN JAN 1778 He was in a detachment of men under the command of Lt. Gibbs and Capt. Harris in the 16th Virginia Regiment commanded by Maj. G. B. Wallace. In June 1778 Jsoeph Carter's company went to Paramus, NJ and then to White Plains, New York but he is listed on the muster rolls as casualty sick at Valley Forge. By Sept 1778 he had rejoined Col. Cropper's men at Camp Newark NJ as a foot soldier for the next 14 months. (The 11th and 15th regiments were combined in May 1778). On 30 Nov Joseph Carter became part of Lt. Col. John Cropper's company of Colonel Morgan's Regiment, attached to General Woodford's Brigade. Addington says (p 102) Carter's Fort in the Rye Cove, was built in 1784 by Thomas Carter and Joseph Carter. It was located on the farm now owned by Floyd Richmond, six miles west of Fort Blackmore, on the Boone and Porter's Road down the Clinch. Norris Carter lived in Fort Blackmore until danger from the Indians was over. He then moved to his farm, where John Carter's family was killed and lived there until his death n 1816. It is reported that Thomas and Joseph Carter retreated to Fort Houston on Big Moccasin for safety when their fort was threatened by Indians. The first settlement and foritifications were so weak that they were abandoned. Norris returned to Fort Blackmore, and Thomas and Joseph went to Black's Fort. Later the Carter brothers returned to the Rye Cove and made a permanent settlement Notes for THOMAS CARTERII: 1773 Thomas removed his family to Rye Cove River (Scott Cty) but they in Fincastle Cty. Mar 1774 he had a grant for 197 acres of land in the Cove and on Mar 31, a grant for 1420 acres to include his improvements. He was a justice of 1st court, May 9, 1780 and Lieut. in Militia. In 1788 he represented Russell Cty in the Constitutional Convention of that year. And is said to have been a menber of legislature several subsequently. Will probated in Russell, Oct. 25, 1803. Was there a son Elijah born 1810? Thomas? m. Matilda Elizabeth. She may have been Morgan as they had a son named Morgan & grandson named Thomas Morgin Two Carter Boys Taken From Rye Cove By Emory L. Hamilton From the unpublished manuscript, Indian Atrocities Along the Clinch, Powell and Holston Rivers, page 160-161. Alexander Barnett, County Lieutenant of Russell Co., VA, wrote Governor Edmund Randolph, on May 15, 1788, (1) thusly: On the 20th of April, a band of Indians came into the Rye Cove settlement and carried off three (3) boys, two of the name of Carter, and a Negro boy belonging to those of the same name, but did not kill anyone in the settlement. Immediately upon this he ordered out men from three companies, under the command of Ensign Blackmore. A man named Henry Hamlin, living in the Cove, and much attached to the crown of Brittain, during the contest, (Revolution) induced the Rangers to go back telling them the people wanted men to be stationed instead of them. In a letter written by Barnett to the Governor on May 20, 1789, (2) he states that the Carter boys were returned to their father through the friendly offices of Governor Simcoe, of South Carolina, but makes no mention of the Negro boy being released. The Carter boys had evidently been taken by the Cherokees. The two Carter boys who were taken were Morgan and Elijah, and are said to have been the sons of Thomas Carter, the builder of Carter's Fort in Rye Cove. (I. C. Coley, Genealogy of the Carters of Scott County.) Col. Joseph Martin, writing to Governor Edmund Randolph, on the 17th of April, 1788, states: Enclosing copies of letters showing the alarmed state of the frontiers of Washington, Russell and Hawkins counties, and indeed throughout the whole of Western North Carolina and what had been known as (the state of) Franklin, on account of incursions of the savages. Along the Holston, and Clinch, in Powell's Valley and other places, the inhabitants were ready to leave the country. He, himself had sold his Station in the latter, and although, through his influence with the Indians, they had not killed a man, woman, or child, within the Virginia line for several years past. Unless something is now done, they will make a strike upon the settlements. He is on his way to the Cherokee Nation, and will exert his powers with them to prevent their threatened attack. His Will was probated in Russell, Co., VA on 10-25-1803. "CARTER, THOMAS, eldest son of Peter and Judith Norris Carter, was born in Fauquier county, April 24, 1731. He removed to Rye Cove, Clinch river, in what is now Scott county, Virginia, in 1773, with his first cousins, Dale and John Carter, sons of Charles Carter, of Amherst. On March 26, 1774, they all had surveys of land, Thomas for one hundred and ninety-seven acres in Rye Cove, and on March 31, 1783, he had another survey for fourteen hundred and twenty acres, to include his improvements. From 1774 to 1784 he was a road overseer in Washington county; and when his home fell into the new county of Russell, he was a justice of the first court of that county, May 9, 1786, and a lieutentant of militia. He represented Russell county in the constitutional convention of 1788, and is said to have served in the legislature several times. His will was probated in Russell county, October 25, 1803". A.A technicality, but Fauquier did not exist in 1731; that's beside the point but it just demonstrates the sloppiness of The Standard Literature. B.Our Thomas was definitely born back in Lancaster - Grand Father Thomas did not die until 1733, so that is the earliest Peter could have arrived; some say it was as late as 1735. C.The 1774 survey of land for Dale Carter could have been either his cousin as stated OR his twin brother! Margie Brown has since proven that it was his brother. D.Separately, Margie Brown (below) proves that cousin John was too young to have had a survey - or to have married Elizabeth Blackmore, etc. - and is proven with his brother Dale over in Smith County, Tennessee after 1800.Turns out, cousin Elizabeth married her cousin John, that is, the son of our Thomas. E.Was he the John in the 1774 survey - as the oldest, just old enough? The only other known John would be the son of Dale of Thomas Jr., where Dale is documented to have stayed back in Lancaster. F.Not yet sure when they arrived, but brothers Joseph and Norris are also proven in Rye Cove. In other words, the banality from WFT needs to be completely rewritten thus: CARTER, THOMAS, eldest son of Peter and Judith Norris Carter, was born with his twin brother Dale in Lancaster County, Virginia on 24 April 1731 (per the Thomas Carter Prayer Book). However, he was raised in King George County, Virginia, where his father had inherited one half of this Estate in 1733; there was then a removal to Fauquier in The Northern Neck and Carter researchers have placed this at Carter's Run, just above today's Warrenton, Fauquier County on the upper reaches of the Rappahannock. It would appear our Thomas, his son John and twin brother Dale - and not his cousins - removed together to Rye Cove on the upper reaches of the Clinch River, Fincastle County, Virginia - that part which eventually became Scott. They all had their surveys of land on 26 March 1774, so the presumption is they arrived the year before. There are many separate and independent anacdotes from the Blackmore, Carter and Taylor families that they came down to Southwest Virginia from the same Fauquier County. It was then our Dale - and not the son of Charles Carter Senior - who yelled "Murder, Murder" outside the gates of Fort Blackmore, and who was shot in the leg and then scalped on 6 October 1774!Our Thomas was, of course, appointed Administrator of his twin brother's estate. The family was joined some time later by the younger brothers Joseph and Norris, as proven by the 1782 Washington County Tax List, an interim county allignment.Thomas then had a second patent for fourteen hundred and twenty acres, with his improvements, surveyed on 31 March 1783.It should then be noted that Rye Cove was in Russell County from 1786 until it's ultimate placement in Scott County in 1814 ... and ... that Thomas is shown on page one of the new Russell County Court Records as one of the sitting magistrates and that sons Charles and John are each shown as Deputy Sheriffs; Charles is separately shown later as a surveyor and Deputy Clerk of the court in the brand new Lee County. We need to make it clear that is was the son of Thomas, and not a fantasy brother John, who was the deputy sheriff cited. There is no way an older brother could have withstood the rigors of such an assignment; besides, Peter does not list a son John in The Prayer Book! This is important because it was the daughter-in-law of our Thomas - that is, John's cousin Elizabeth of Charles Senior, and not Elizabeth Blakemore - who was butchered and burnedwith her six children in their home near Fort Blackmore on 9 September, 1787, one scant year later! The seventh child in the bushes. There is the separate tale of the kidnapping of Morgan and Elisha in 1788; fortunately, they were found and returned. In other words, the full and accurate story of our Thomas Carter is that he lost his twin brother, lost his daughter-in-law and seven grand children ..... and ..... had two sons kidnapped by the Cherokee - all the while remaining steadfast and loyal to his new county, state and country. His brothers Joseph, Solomon and Peter were serving in the Revolution in Amherst County even as Thomas was establishing the new governments in Richmond and Washington. He is later found in Russell County records as Magistrate in the first session of 1786, and sat for many years. In addition to his bench duties, he is seen continuously over the next seventeen years as both Lt. and Captain of the Militia, designated arbitrator in several complaints at court, High Sheriff, Chief Constable and finally, plain sheriff just months before his death in 1803. Dosn't a total of 25 years in public service deserve a place of honor in the legacy of The Sheriffs of Lancaster? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a rare snapshot of the Blackmore / Carter mess at Rye Cove; don't forget Uncle Dale (twin brother to our Thomas) was lost back in 1774, and Capt. John Blackmore and Lucy (presumably with her sons John and Dale **) had joined the Donelson party in the spring of 1780.Therefor, the following John, Thomas and William were the adult sons of Capt. John left behind, along with his brother Joseph and stepson Charles Carter: 1782 Washington County, Virginia Tax List Blackmore, John 1 ? 18 11 Tom, James, Geo., Jacob, Peter, Harry, Doll, Rachel, Nan, Hannah, & Beck Blackmore, Joseph 1 9 ? 5 Sarah, Easter, Tom, Poll, ................brother of Capt. "There are other references to this estate in Russell County and Lee County court books between John Carter's death and the final settlement in 1809: [reformatted by rcz] "1.In Russell Co.
