Notes
a. Note:   GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES From the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. I. Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1982. Page 659. "Norris Carter (Peter (3), Thomas (2)) was probably the youngest son of Peter Carter, of Fauquier. He settles near his brothers Thomas and Joseph in southwest Virginia, but the date is unknown. In 1793 he had a small grant in Russell Co., and in 1805 purchased a part of a large tract on the north side of Clinch that had been granted to his cousin, John Carter, in 1783. September23, 1804, Norris Carter and wife Agnes gave a power of attorney to their son, Henry Carter, to collect certain debts from Henry Taylor -all of them of Russell. The frequent appearance of the name Taylor among the descendants of Norris suggests that his wife may have been Agnes Taylor. His will, probated June 8, 1816, in Scott Co.,
left entire estate to wife Anges "for her comfortable maintenance during her life," after which son Henry was to have the home part of the plantation, and granddaugther Jemima Carter, eldest daughter of daughter Molly, to have the part "below the Big Branch." Residue to all children equally. They were: Henry; Peter; John; Williamson; Dale; Charles Burr; Molly Carter."
Just for the public record, even five years later; because of our unique Charles Carter Sr., we have had to go in depth to the children of his brother Peter.Feel free to visit our website for constant updates to The Carters of Barford:http://home.comcast.net/~zieman3/familytree.htmhttp://home.comcast.net/~zieman3/familytree.htm

 Biography and Notes:
  Norris Carter F.1. Buried:
Direct from The Thomas Prayer Book, see B. below (none of us knows if Peter's sons were born in King George or in that part of Prince William that became Fauquier).Regardless, there are over a dozen miscellaneous (and unconnected) references to the family "coming from" Fauquier; we can therefor say with certainty that Peter's children grew up there.
  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to Carter Dodge on the internet
According to the Rita K Sutton book, "Early Carters in Scott County, Virginia", "Agnes Allen may have been a widow. Dr. Samuel Stallard made this entry in his Family Bible: 'My mother's father was Norris Carter. I think he came from Fauquier Co., VA. * My mother's mother was named Agnes Taylor before marriage to said Norris Carter.'"
Rita Sutton's book also says that Norris married Agnes Davidson.
  * First hand information - not from The Books.
  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[see the 1782 Washington County tax list below, earliest known record of Norris - yes, places him at Fort Blackmore, his first cousins by way of Charles Sr., youngest son of Thomas Jr., brother to Peter, his ward.]
"The exact date that Norris Carter came to the frontier is unknown. It is known that he signed the petition for forming Russell County, VA. on Dec. 9, 1785.Norris and his family lived for a time in Fort Blackmore, VA. His original land grant lay on both sides of the Clinch River and adjoined that of Benjamin Pendleton.
"Norris lived most of his life on the south side of the river, but on Nov. 17, 1805, bought 72 acres adjoining his land at the mouth of Cove Creek from Robert Mitchell. Mitchell had bought this tract from John Carter whose patent was dated April 1, 1783."
The source of this transaction is from his widowed cousin John (John's wife Elizabeth and seven children were massacred at Ft. Blackmore in 1787):Russell County Court Transcriptions: P275 - Court, October 25, 1803 - Indenture from John Carter to Robert Mitchell, oaths of James Gibson, John Hoope & Daniel Nelson, recorded
  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He lived on Cove Creek and, was the father of six sons, from whom a large number of the Carters of the present day are descended. His Will, probated August 13, 1816, was the first probated in Scott County. Judge C.T. Duncan, a great-grandson of his, made the principal address at the centennial celebration of the organization of the county in 1915.
6 JUL 1816 Made his will: names wife Agnes, son Henry, Jemima Dau of Mollie
Birth: 8 Nov 1748 in Prince William Co. Va.Death: Jul 1816 in Scott Co. Va.
Note: Norris Carter was married to Agnes Allen who survived him. Both are said to have been buried in the family cemetery, on the farm on the south side of the river. When Norris came out to the frontier is unknown. He and his family lived for a time at Fort Blackmore. His original land grant lay on both sides of Clinch River. Norris lived most of his life on the south side of the river. To reach his homestead, one must cross the swinging bridge and turn left on a road which comes to an end about a mile away. There is a short walk to the knoll where a very old house is standing. Descendants who live nearby say it was there in Indian times. It may have been built by Norris Carter. Graves in the family cemetery were marked by field stones, now scattered and destroyed.

Here's a rare snapshot of the Blackmore / Carter mess at Rye Cove; don't forget Uncle Dale (twin brother to our Thomas) was lost back in 1774, and Capt. John Blackmore and Lucy (presumably with her sons John and Dale **) had joined the Donelson party in the spring of 1780.Therefor, the following John, Thomas and William were the adult sons of Capt. John left behind, along with his brother Joseph and stepson Charles Carter ..... and ..... stepson-in-law, John Carter, brother to Charles.(Elizabeth and children were massacred in 1787):

Blackmore, Joseph 1 9 ? 5 Sarah, Easter, Tom, Poll, ................brother of Capt. John
Carter, John 1 7 13 2......................... by 1782 this has to be the son of Thomas below **, John would be
living up here with the Blackmore because of his wife Elizabeth, wouldn't he?She was the step-
daughter of Capt. John, and this implies John and the still living Elizabeth are on the originial survey
of Capt. John Blackmore?!? These three listings would be Ft. Blackmore itself?
Why would a brother of Thomas be up here?

  Smith, Edmond 2 12 17
 Carter, Charles 2 13 10........................... has to be cousin Charles A.2. , brother-in-law of John ... and ...

  * The transcriber warned there were many tears and disfigurations in the original documents.
** There is no Dale nor another John on this list - this adds general weight to The Margie Brown
Rebuttal; however ..... at the same time ..... this proves Margie made a s minor error in stating
John was a brother to Thomas, rather than his son.A.below - All she originally said and proved
was that Joseph was a son of John - of the line of Thomas.B.below - The Thomas Prayer Book
proves there was no brother John to Patriot Thomas.

All this says, is that CHARLES was the brother of John, NOT that Thomas was the brother!David and Margie just slip later in their argument and state that they had proven Thomas was the brother.

"Norris Carter, the younger of the three sons of Peter and Judith Carter of Fauquier, who settled on Clinch, seems to have gone there at a later date than his brothers Thomas and Joseph .He seems to have purchased a farm in Rye Cove, but the Washington records, which are not complete, fail to show record of same. In 1793 he had a small grant of land and in 1805 he purchased a part of a large tract that had been granted to his cousin, John Carter, in1783. Norris Carter, born Nov. 8, 1748, was married about 1770-71 to Agnes Allen, a half-sister of his brother Joseph Carter's wife. He made his will June 7, 1816, which was probated Aug. 13, 1816; in which he gave to wife, Agnes Carter, his entire estate, both real and personal, for the remainder of her life, "it being my intention to give my said wife a fund sufficient for her comfortable maintenance during life out of its increase or profits, which I intend she shall use for that purpose." After death of his wife he desired that his granddaughter, Jemima Carter, eldest daughter of his daughter Molly, should have "all my lands, building and household furniture lying below the big branch running through the plantation whereon I now live. "And son Henry to have the remainder of the plantation."

Norris Carter was born Nov. 8, 1748, the son of Peter and Judith Norris Carter, in Fauquier Co., VA, a brother to Job Carter, Norris married Agnes Allen. It is possible, but unproven, that Agnes may have been married before to a Taylor and widowed. Norris and Agnes had ten known children.
The exact date that Norris Carter came to the frontier is unknown. It is known that he signed the petition for forming Russell County, VA. on Dec. 9, 1785.
Norris and his family lived for a time in Fort Blackmore, VA. His original land grant lay on both sides of the Clinch River and adjoined that of Benjamin Pendleton.
Norris lived most of his life on the south side of the river, but on Nov. 17, 1805, bought 72 acres adjoining his land at the mouth of Cove Creek from Robert Mitchell. To reach his homestead on the south side, one must cross the swinging bridge at Slant, turn left on a road which comes to an end about a mile away, and then take a short walk to the knoll where a very old house is standing. This log house is believed to be the very house that Norris built himself. He appeared to have lived the latter part of his life on the north side of the Clinch though and probably died there between June 7 and Aug. 13, 1816 Agnes survived him. Both are buried on the south side of the river.

Rev John Pendleton was born between 1782/1792 & was the son of Benjamin Pendleton, a Revolutionary War veteran who left Amherst County Virginia during the 1780`s and settled in southwest Virginia along the Clinch River of what is now Scott County. The Pendleton ancestors originally came from Norwich, England and settled in Virginia during the 1660's.
Benjamin married Frances Carter who was killed in 1791 during an indian attack at Mocassin Gap near the Clinch River. He is believed to have married his wife`s sister Sarah Carter a few months later. Frances & Sarah Carter were daughters of Peter & Judith (Norris) Carter who also came from the Amherst County, VA area, settlling in the Clinch River area at same time as the Pendleton family.

The part of Prince WIlliam county where Joseph grew up became part of new Fauquier County when it was created from Prince William in 1759. Joseph Carter was a private in the first company of militia known to have been organized in the new county, in 1761 (see Fauquier county, Va Court Minutes 1759-1763, p. 155).
[Forget all the fussy details - the Regiment was mustered at Fauquier County! This proves Peter in Fauquier - Amen to that. Note the writers emphasis on Morgan].
Thomas Harrison took the oath as the new County Lieutenant at a court held 23 April 1761 and on William Edmonds' receiving his commission as captain of militia the following 29 August, Harrison furnished Edmonds with a muster list of the officers and men who were to constitute his company. Joseph Carter's name is on this 1761 list -- as were the names of William Norris, William Russell, Thomas Porter, and four Morgans (names intertwined with the Carter family). Captain Edmond's 70 men were with the Virginia troops who fought in the French and Indian War. Joseph Carter was 25 years old.
Joseph married ca 1765/70 and enlisted for a 3 year term on 22 August 1777.

He was in a detachment of men under the command of Lt. Gibbs and Capt. Harris in the 16th Virginia Regiment commanded by Maj. G. B. Wallace. In June 1778 Jsoeph Carter's company went to Paramus, NJ and then to White Plains, New York but he is listed on the muster rolls as casualty sick at Valley Forge. By Sept 1778 he had rejoined Col. Cropper's men at Camp Newark NJ as a foot soldier for the next 14 months. (The 11th and 15th regiments were combined in May 1778). On 30 Nov Joseph Carter became part of Lt. Col. John Cropper's company of Colonel Morgan's Regiment, attached to General Woodford's Brigade.
Addington says (p 102) Carter's Fort in the Rye Cove, was built in 1784 by Thomas Carter and Joseph Carter. It was located on the farm now owned by Floyd Richmond, six miles west of Fort Blackmore, on the Boone and Porter's Road down the Clinch. Norris Carter lived in Fort Blackmore until danger from the Indians was over. He then moved to his farm, where John Carter's family was killed and lived there until his death n 1816. It is reported that Thomas and Joseph Carter retreated to Fort Houston on Big Moccasin for safety when their fort was threatened by Indians. The first settlement and foritifications were so weak that they were abandoned. Norris returned to Fort Blackmore, and Thomas and Joseph went to Black's Fort. Later the Carter brothers returned to the Rye Cove and made a permanent settlement
