Notes
a. Note:   Dear Editor,
This letter is written to congratulate and commend Hester Hewitt upon her retirement as a schoolteacher in the Cheatham County school system, after years of meritorious and faithful service.
I understand Hester will be honored at a tea at West Cheatham School on May 16th and I would be present to honor her; however, my work takes me out of state on that day.
Hester Hewitt has given much of herself to Cheatham County and its children. I count myself and my late husband as most fortunate in having Hester help us in formulating the early years of our two daughters, and I know I speak for many Cheatham County Families.
Hester has the knowledge, patience, integrity and industry, coupled with a sense of humor that has made her years of teaching a great contribution to Cheatham County. She is not only a teacher of children, but she is a friend of children as well, always recognizing that children also have rights of their own.
I could tell you many things that Hester has done, not only in the area of imparting and motivating knowledge, but in working for the school system at a time when there was no financing. I have worked with her on projects, in the early years, just to pay the light bills for the schoolroom and to add additional needed equipment.
I salute you, Hester, and I designate you as one to receive the "Carolyn Cowan Award of Excellency."
My best wishes go to you for many happy years after you are no longer in the classroom. I would wish for you many happy hours, days, and years in retirement, but knowing you, you will continue to serve Cheatham County in some capacity, for in this I am sure you will find your future happiness.
You have been a perfect role model for all teachers and would-be teachers.
How wonderful it is that Cheatham County has a Hester Hewitt, and that she chose to serve it for so many years as a teacher of our young. [Carolyn P. Cowan]

  Dear Mr. Orange,
Words cannot express the gratitude that we feel for your kind words expressed in the Cheatham County Resolution 4, dated October 16, 2000, Memorial to Mrs. Hester Hewitt.
The comments you and the County Commissioners offered in remembrance of my sister Hester were of great comfort to me and my wife as well as to Hester's sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Daugherty, Mrs. Ruth Hogan, and Mrs. Martha Osborn. I have taken the liberty of forwarding the resolution to my sisters and they have asked that I assure you and the commissioners that your warm thoughts have eased our loss a great deal.
Seldom does one find an organization which will take the time to convey their feelings at the loss of one of the citizens of the community. It reflects well on your values and is most appreciated.
  Sincerely,
  Mr. Kenneth Pinson
