Norwood was sworn in as Ashland City's new mayor Jan. 11 by judge Bill Stinnett as his children, Ben and Amanda, looked on. "I'm eager and excited," Norwood said minutes after taking his oath. "I've been in this business for so many years that instead of being nervous, I'm ready to get going." The former public works director defeated five-year incumbent mayor Mary Grey Jenkins last December to take the city's top position. "There are so many things I want to do," Norwood said. Norwood met with department heads last Wednesday morning to discuss the city's future plans. "I haven't met with any of them because out of respect for mayor Jenkins. I didn't want to step on her toes," he said. "It's just getting started, letting the department heads know what I expect of them and what we're going to do differently than what we've done in the past several years." After meeting with city officials, Norwood will have a better understanding of the issues he plans to tackle. "I want to see some results," he said. "I want to let the people know we're here for them. We're going to make a difference." "It's all about attitude. It will have a domino effect, starting with me to the department heads to the employees, and I think we will have an outstanding organization." Along with Norwood, six Council members also took office, including incumbents Steve Allen and Janice Vick and newcomers Patrick Smith, Penny Brooks, Ken Pinson and Jerry Woodard. Allen was elected vice-mayor after Vick, the outgoing vice-mayor, nominated him for the position. "I'll do my best," Allen said. During the 90-minute meeting, the new council was introduced to the department heads and updated on the latest city water and sewer projects. "Welcome aboard," said city administrator Lynn Manning. "It's going to be a learning experience for all of us. With a very short agenda, the council only took action on a few items - adding Martin Luther King Jr. and Veterans Day to the list of paid holidays and reappointing Demetra O'Neal as city recorder. Manning also told council members that proposals for the salary study will be opened in February. Each city employee has submitted a job analysis form. Norwood, Pinson and Allen will serve on the salary study committee. <=====> Lydia, Great Aunt Mary wanted you to know that "Budgie" went to Mary Beth - Shirley's (Kens Wifes) sister. Mary Ruth Pinson O'Dell also wanted to know if you knew that Shirley had died last summer from stroke. She also wants to know where you live. <<(don't tell, then she will have a million other questions)>> Uncle Ken came through to see Mom a few months after Shirley's passing. He was always so low key with that beautiful southern accent you have down there. This time he was dog drunk 10 minutes after arriving. He brought gallons "Gallons" of Old Forester whiskey and 5 or 6 gallons of nigger wine that no one could get down. He had a pistol out which Mom is adamant about not having in her house and he took it to his truck. I stayed for a while and was freaked out with the garble he was spouting off with. I thought he was goofing or acting out, but it turned out to be weird. I left and later found out he wound up falling (with her) in the hallway as she was trying to help him to the bathroom. Mom finally got him to collect himself enough to crawl the bathroom. Wow, not the Uncle Ken I remember. Shirleys death was his death toll it seems. They were surely Granfalloons. He had a DUI wreck a month ago and was injured - hit several cars. Family stories I may editorialize: Trip to the Clarksville Livery Stable with Uncle Earl Seeing Elvis there in Belle Meade across from Aunt Elizabeth's where Chet Atkins used to live - that was the weekend Sissy was heading to Germany the first time. Aunt Liz calling me spoofing a voice - trying to scare me. "Ruth" is 90, completely in control of her life and everyone elses. Perfect health, spotless house, cooks great meals like your Great Grandmother Sally Pinson At Elizabeth's funeral - did I ride back to the Church with you in your van? Do you remember me? I remember you when you were little. Sorry about the blab. I find it sad to lose the last connection to middle Tennessee where my Mom came from. and, I start writing and cant stop, recanting keeps my memories alive.
