Notes
a. Note:
Charles Dunn gave me this account of the Dunn early history: "My grandfather, John Dunn, when a young man was a weaver. He went from Ireland over to Glasgow , Scotland, where he contracted malaria (ague). His father had to go and bring him home when he had recovered enough to travel. John said, "Give me $20 and I`ll go to America and never bother you again."

"John worked 7 years at Rochester, NY, on a farm by the lake. In this time he managed to save up $20 and sent for his brother. It took only half as long, with both working, to send for the next brother, and they all worked until the entire family was in the U.S."

"He and a friend, James Strahan (age 31, 1850 Census), walked to Albany, Ill., and up to Iowa. They were disillusioned and walked back, 1837 or `38. Later, in `39 or `40, he walked to Pittsburgh, to Cairo, Ill., up the river to Clinton. In 1840 he built the stone house the house that Jack built in south Clinton." I saw the house and took a picture. It has since been torn down.

Another source says, "John Dunn worked as a weaver in Syracuse, NY. In 1837 he walked to Iowa Territory with a buddie, James Strahan. He bought 160a. of land at $1.50 per acre. He brought his family the next year via the Great Lakes and covered wagon. [McCones of Iowa]
