Text: LONELY DEATH Scalper and Prospector Relatives in Rockhampton CAIRNS, October 17. Hobbled horses wandering on Oaks Park station last week led to the dis- covery of the body of a prospector and dingo scalper, Arthur Rose, 40, in an advanced state of decomposition. The body was lying face downwards outside a camp at Bullock Dray Creek. A tragic story of the bushman's fate is contained in messages received by the Cairns police on Saturday. An aboriginal saw the strange horses and reported the discovery to Charles Paine, stockman, who, with James Nimmo, manager of Oaks Park sta- tion made a search for the owner of the horses. They reported to Con- stable Johnston, that they found the remains of a man who had apparently been dead for some time. Johnston investigated the matter and found no evidence of foul play or violence. The body because of its decomposi- tion, was buried at the spot. It is surmised that Rose was stricken ill shortly after arrival at the camp, about six weeks ago. as the outfit had not been disturbed. He was a new arrival to the district, having lived in Hughenden district until seven weeks ago, where he was work- ing a gold reef. He was travelling alone on a dingo scalping and pros- pecting trip towards Gregory Spring. The locality in which he was found is very isolated and about 30 miles from the nearest road. Papers on the body revealed that he was a re- turned soldier and had relatives in Rockhampton.
