  "...At the same time that a State school was being sought for Capella, residents in the Chirnside area, five miles south of Capella were also making moves for the constructionof a Provisional school.
  In 1896, Messrs H. Limpus, J. Doran, and W.J.Reade wrote to the Department of Instruction asking whether permission for aProvisional school could be granted. " We draw your attention to the fact of our being all settlers upon the land and have no school advantage for ourchildren. We may further inform you there are more families about to take upthis residence in close proximity to the proposed school." (28) They mentioned the fact that coal was being prospected for in the area and that "this site will be close to any family that may be employed in the mines." It is interesting to note that in the 1970s, the Peak Downs area became the centre for some of the largest coal mining operations in Queensland.
