  CIVIL WAR VETERAN, CO. D, 80TH OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
  WOUNDED AT THE BATTLE OF CORINTH
  PARTICIPATED IN GEN. WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN'S MARCH TO THE SEA
  Lewis enlisted in 1861 in the 80th Ohio with his older brother Sgt. William Wiard. Both men were wounded at the Battle of Corinth 4 Oct 1862. William died of his wounds about a month later in Paducah, KY. Lewis survived and was made Corporal on June 19, 1864. He went on Sherman's famous "March to the Sea" and was mustered out of service on Aug. 13, 1865.
  "He [Lewis] and his brother (Will) joined the 80th Ohio volunteer infantry at Kilgore, OH, and both were wounded in battle. Will died in the hospital; Lewis carried the bullet in his hip until he died in 1918." --Dan Wiard
  THE 80TH OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY, by Larry Overmire
 The 80th gave honorable service during the war, participating in many major campaigns including the Battle of Corinth, Oct. 4, 1862, where it sustained heavy losses, the siege of Vicksburg from May 18 to July 14, 1863, Missionary Ridge on November 25, 1863, and Sherman's March to the Sea. During the course of the war, the regiment lost 4 Officers and 48 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 179 Enlisted men to disease for a total of 224.
  FROM BOB HARRINGTON:
 The 80th O.V.I. was organized from October, 1861 to January, 1862, in the state at large, to serve three years, and was mustered out August 13, 1865, by order of the war department. E. R. Eckley was appointed colonel December 29, 1861, and resigned February 24, 1863 to accept a seat in Congress. Captain David Skeels, Co. D. Was promoted to major of the regiment, Jan 24, 1864. Hiram G. Tope was regimental surgeon; James E. Philpott, adjutant; George W. Pepper, chaplain; S. S. West, sergeant major; William J. Eckley and James Catrel, quarter-master sergeants.
  He appears as "Lewis Wiard" in the 1880 census, which indicates his parents were born in West Virginia.
  OBITUARY OF LEWIS WIARD, CARROLL CHRONICLE, CARROLLTON, OHIO, JUL 15, 1918
 "Another old soldier has passed away! Lewis W. Wiard died of heart disease at 8 o'clock Sunday night. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. J. W. Butler, were held at the home Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial was made in Grandview Cemetery.
  "Lewis W. Wiard was born in Loudon County, Virginia, on Independence Day, 1839. He came to Carroll County a short time before the Civil War, and in 1861 enlisted in Company D, 80th Ohio Volunteers Infantry. His brother William C. Wiard, enlisted at the same time and was later killed in the service. Mr. Wiard was four years in the service, was wounded in the battle of Corinth, and participated in 'the march to the sea.' He received an honorable discharge with the rank of Corporal.
  "He was married in 1867 to Rosella [Ed. Note: this is an error, should be Drucilla] Harding, native of Carroll County, who survives, together with the following children born to them: Will Wiard of Pittsburgh, Burt of Carrollton, Homer of Pittsburgh, Emma wife of M. M. Thompson of Chicago, and John of Willoughby. Seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. The only surviving member of his father's family is Mrs. Leah Porter, a sister, of Baltimore.
  "Mr. Wiard came to Carrollton from Malvern about 35 years ago, and until a few years ago worked at his trade as cooper and broom maker."
