Note: N54 CIVIL WAR VETERAN, CO. A., 186TH OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY SEXTON OF GRANDVIEW CEMETERY Oliver served with the 186th Ohio Infantry in the Civil War. Also in that regiment in Co. E. was George B. Overmier, a cousin to the author of this database. Oliver moved to Carrollton in 1880. 186TH OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY The 186th was organized for a term of one year. It immediately went into Tennessee under the command of Col Thomas F. Wilder, then to Dalton, Georgia, Chattanooga and Nashville and finally to Columbus, Ohio where it was mustered out September 25, 1865. The regiment lost one soldier killed and forty-nine to disease. OBITUARY OF OLIVER HARDING, FREE PRESS STANDARD, CARROLLTON, OH, DEC. 20, 1920: Oliver Harding, civil war veteran, died Wednesday noon at his residence on East Main Street after an illness of two days of pneumonia. He was born at Kilgore, February 18, 1843, a son of John Harding, and was aged 78 years. In February, 1867, he was married at Kilgore to Maria Fetty. To this union two sons were born --- Elmer, deceased, and William, residing at Arlington, Florida. Mr. Harding, with his family, moved to Carrollton in 1880, he following his trade as Carpenter. Because of the ill health of Mrs. Harding the family removed to Florida a few years later, where the wife and mother died shortly afterward. Mr. Harding returned to Carrollton, where he was later married to Mrs. Laura McLaughlin, who survives. He is survived by a brother, William Harding, of Kilgore, and two sisters, Mrs. Drucilla Wiard, of Carrollton, and Emeline Long, of Bergholz, besides a half-brother, Frank B. Hosterman, of Carrollton, and a half-sister, Mrs. Ellen Simmons near Harlem Springs. Mr. Harding was a life long member of the Methodist Church, was quiet and unassuming, and lived true to his faith in God. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the residence, and interment will be in Grandview. OBITUARY OF OLIVER HARDING, CARROLL CHRONICLE, CARROLLTON, OH, FRI. DEC. 24, 1920 Oliver Harding, veteran of the Civil War, died at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, after a few hours' sickness with pneumonia. Funeral services will be held today (Friday) at 1 p.m. at the home, 91 East Main Street, and will be conducted by Rev. J. H. Hawk and Rev. J. H. Butler. Burial will be made in Grandview Cemetery. Mr. Harding was born in Loudon Township, February 18, 1843. He was twice married. His first wife, whose maiden name was Felty, died some years ago in Florida where they made their home for several years. In 1902 he was married to Mrs. Laura (Shepherd) McLaughlin. During the Civil War, Mr. Harding enlisted in Co. A, 186th O. V. I., and he had a long and honorable war record. For several years he was sexton of Grandview Cemetery. Owing to his feeble health he spent a short time this winter at the soldiers' home in Dayton. Surviving are the widow and one son, William Harding, in Florida; one brother, William Harding of Kilgore; two sisters, Mrs. Lewis Wiard of Carrollton and Mrs. Emma Long of Bergholz. WILL OF OLIVER HARDING: Oliver Harding, of Carrollton, Ohio, being sound and disposing mind and memory, do make, publish and declare, this to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking and making null and void, all other wills and testaments by me made heretofore. Item 1st -- May will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid out of my estate as soon after my decease as shall be found convenient. Item 2nd -- I give and bequeath to my wife, Laura Harding, in lieu of her right of dower, her distributive share of my estate under the law, and the right to a years support, all my household and kitchen furniture and the sum of six Hundred Dollars ($600.00) to be absolutely her own forever, the same to be in full of all her right, title and interest in and to my estate under the laws of Ohio. Item 3rd -- I give and bequeath to my son, William J. Harding, two notes which I hold against him, one for One Hundred Dollar )$100.00) and the other for Fifty Dollars ($50.00) - both of which shall be surrendered to him by my executor. Item 4th -- It is my will that my Executor hereinafter named shall cause to be erected at my grave, a suitable monument, to be in keeping with my estate, the cost of which shall be reasonable and not to exceed the sum of One Hundred and Twenty-five Dollars ($125.00) Item 5th -- I hereby direct that the sum of Fifty Dollars ($50.00) shall be set aside as a perpetual trust fund, the same to be paid to the cemetery trustees, to be by them held in trust and the interest of said sum devoted to the purpose of taking care of our graves and the burial lot in Grandview cemetery, Carrollton, Ohio. Item 6th -- To my son, William J. Harding and his heirs, I give, bequeath and devise all the remainder of my property forever, free from any right or claim therein of my said wife, Laura Harding. I hereby nominate and appoint J. C. Oglevee, executor of this my last will and testament, and I hereby authorize, direct and empower him to sell the real estate, either at public or private sale as he shall deem best, execute, acknowledge the proceeds in accordance with the terms and provisions of this Will. In Testimony Whereof I have hereunto set my hand to this my last will and testament composed of two sheets and six separate items, at Carrollton, Ohio, this 7th day of November, A.D. 1913.
