Note: N60 Researcher Chris Ramsey is a descendant. CIVIL WAR VETERAN, CO. D, 80TH OHIO NOTES BY CHRIS RAMSEY: William served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He served in Company D 80th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In the 1900 census William was living in Loudon Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio. William was listed as age 55 (Widowed) born March 1845 in Ohio, his daughter Charlotte C. age 17 born July 1882 in Ohio. This next below was a letter William wrote to his uncle, Phillip Harding while he was serving in the Civil War. Boyed Station Alabama, May 26, 1864 Dear Uncle, I take my pen in hand to write you a few lines to let you no how we are getting along. My self with the rest of the boys are all well except John Lucas he is not well he has the measles he had them very bad for a few days, but he is getting better now the rest of the boys all Seen to be well contented we got here in the 13 of this month our regiment is scattered out along the railroad doing guard duty now our Company is camped at Boyed Station we have been busy building a fort since we came here but we have it about finished now it is reported that there is about 300 gorillas a coming to take this place and tare the railroad up if they do come we will give them a warm reception. Every thing looks very well here now the wheat what little there is, is out in blossom. There was but little wheat put out here last year the corn looks very well. There is going to be plenty of peaches here and there will be some apples. There is some talk of moving us to the front to help to fight but we don't no for sure yet whether we will have to go or not. They have been sending some of the hundred day one to the front. We haven't herd any late news from the front I do not no how they are getting along now but the last that we herd was our men was driving them. I would be glad to hear from you now would like to no how the militia is getting along whether they have been called out yet or not well must bring my letter to a close for the present. William Harding to Phillip Harding Direct your letters to Company D 80 Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 2nd Brigade 3 Division, By the way of Nashville, Tennessee OBITUARY William Harding, one of the few surviving Civil War veterans, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nellie Amos, near Carrollton, Sunday evening. Uremia was the cause of his death. Burial was made at Kilgore, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Messrs Shafer and Sigler, M. E. pastors at Carrollton and Kilgore, respectively. Mr. Harding was born in Loudon Township, February 26, 1847, and was married to Samantha Burrier in September, 1866. The wife died in 1899. Mr. Harding enlisted in Co. D, 80th O.V.I. at the outbreak of the Civil War and he had a long and memorable record in the army of the union. when a young man he united with the Methodist Church and he remained a member of that church until his death. His life was spent in the township of his birth until his removal here about a year ago. Surviving are a son, Dr. Harding of Amsterdam, the daughter named above, and a sister, Mrs. Lewis Wiard of Carrollton and nine grandchildren. (NOTE--his obituary stated his birth as February 26, 1847, but church records states, March 22, 1845?)
