He was active from 1780 to 1781. The first unit he served in was the Surry County Regiment. He was a Private under Capt. James Freeman and Maj. John Armstrong (a Continental officer). He claims he was at the battles of Hanging Rock, SC and Eutaw Springs, SC, but does not name his officers. He also claims to have been in the Continental Line, but the officers he named are not from NC, and he does not show up on any official rosters. aka John Stotes, John Stott. In 1781 Andrew Stots and his son John Stotts were included on a list on April 6, 1781 for the Montgomery Co., VA Militia under Capt. Pierce's Company. John Stotts was listed on the 1790 Surry Co., NC census as John Stottz. In 1797 John Stotts was identified on a deed where he was granted property on Reed Creek in Wythe Co., Virginia from his parents Andrew and Mary Stotts. The name of John Stotts' first wife remains unidentified. About 1805 he married his second wife Anne Whooton in Surry Co., NC. The 1810 Washington Co., VA census shows the household for John Stotts included males: 2 <10, 2 10-15, 1 26-44 and females: 2 <10, 2 10-15, 1 26-44. Consequently, John Stotts was born between 1765 and 1784 or about 1775 and his wife was also born about 1775. The 1820 Floyd Co., KY census shows the household for John Stotts included males: 2 <10, 1 10-16-, 1 = or >45 and females: 2 <10, 1 26-45. Consequently, John Stotts was born before 1775 and his wife was born between 1775 and 1795 or about 1785. The 1823, 1824, 1825, 1826 Pike Co., KY tax lists (Pike was formed from Floyd) included John Stotts. (The 1823 tax lists shows both John Stotts, Sr. and John Stotts, Jr.) On May 23, 1825, in Pike Co., KY John Stotts, Silas P. Ooten and Levi Ooten were witnesses to the marriage of John Frederick or Jude and Martha "Patsy" Boney. An 1825 land grant of 50 acres in Pike Co., KY was issued to John Stotts, which was later sold just six years later when he was living in neighboring Logan Co., VA (WV). In 1829 John Stotts applied for a Revolutionary War pension that was rejected under the act of 1828. He stated he was of Pike Co., KY, late of Surry Co., NC and was about age 80, suggesting he was born about 1750. Pension Application of John Stotes (Stott): R20174 Transcribed and annotated by C. Leon Harris For the purpose of obtaining the benefits of the several acts for the relief of certain surviving officers and soldiers of the army of the revolution and more particularly that which was approved on the 15 day of May 1828, I John Stotes, late of the County of Surry in the state of th North Carolina, but now a resident of the County of Pike in the State of Kentucky, being about 80 years of age, infirm and almost helpless and in indigent circumstances, worth in all not more than 50 Dollars - do hereby declare that I enlisted in the continental line of the revolution for 2 years in the Company of Capt James Hawkins, the Leutenants name was Neamiah [last name illegible] in the Regiment commanded by Col Stewart. I served out this time and obtained my discharge. I further declare that on my return from the army I volunteered for 6 months in the company of Capt. Freeman this was also in the continental establishment. Col John Armstrong was the commanding officer during this term of service. I was at the battle called Gates' defeat [Battle of Camden SC where Gen. Horatio Gates was defeated, 16 Aug 1780] and at the engagement at a place called the hanging rock [Hanging Rock SC, either 30 Jul or 6 Aug 1780]. also at the battle at the Utaw Springs [Eutaw Springs SC, 8 Sep 1781]. I served out this time. I again voleteered in the same company and under the same officers, and continued in the continental service to the conclusion of the war It was during this time that I followed the British into Virginia on there march to York Town. I received a discharge from Col Armstrong Exempting me in future from all military service which I lost with the rest of my discharges 10 or 12 years ago. I further declare that I received no remuneration for my services in the Army of the Revolution but some Continental paper (as it was called) which prooved of no value to me, and I further declare If my memory serves me right that I received a certificate for the reward of Eighty dollars to which I was entitled to under a resolve of Congress passed 15 May 1778. - I further declare that I was not on the th pension list of the United States on the 15 Day of March 1829. given under my hand & seal th this 24 Day of Oct 1829. John hisXmark Stotes th [Response to a Treasury Department request for verification, dated 9 Dec 1829:] The name of John Stotes cannot be found among those of the North Carolina line to whom Certificates for the gratuity of Eighty Collars were issued. [signed] Peterr Hagman Aud[itor] War Dept. Bounty Land Office Dec'r 18 1829 th The name of John Stotes does not appear on the Records of the North Carolina line on file in this Office among those entitled to Bounty Land or to whom a Land Warrant ever issued. Wm. Gordon Source: http://revwarapps.org/r20174.pdf The 1830 Logan Co., VA (WV) census shows the household for John Stotts included males: 1 10-14, 1 15-19, 1 70-79 and females: 1<5, 1 5-9, 1 10-14, 1 50-59. Consequently, John Stotts was born about 1755 and his wife was born about 1775. In 1831 while living in Logan Co., VA John Stotts sold the land he received in the previously mentioned land grant in 1825 in Pike Co., KY. Since he was already over 80 years old when the property was sold, he probably died shortly afterward about 1835 which was approximately when his widow Ann moved with her children to Indiana since she was listed on the 1840 Lawrence Co., IN census living near her children Abel Stotts, Peter Stotts, Elizabeth (Stotts) Leach and Nancy (Ooten) Coleman. Her sons Levi Ooten and Jordan Ooten also moved to Indiana. Her son Silas P. (W)ooten died about 1830 in Pike Co., KY and his widow Elizabeth (Williamson) then married Abraham Miller or Millard in 1833 in Pike Co., KY. The 1840 Lawrence Co., IN census shows the household of "An Stotts" included 1 female 70-80 or born about 1760-1770 or about 1765. She was the only person listed in her household. Her closest neighbor was her daughter Elizabeth (Stotts) Leach in the household of her husband Peter Leach. The census included males: 2 <5, 1 10-15, 1 30-40 and females: 1 20-30. Peter was born about 1805 and his wife was born about 1815. According to the Pike Co., KY marriage records Peter Leech married Elizabeth Stotts, daughter of John Stotts, on 4-7-1831. The 1840 Lawrence Co., IN census also showed her sons Abel Stotts and Peter Stotts and her daughter Nancy Coleman also lived near Ann. According to the 1850 Lawrence Co., IN census Ann was living with her daughter Nancy Coleman in the household of Alexander Coleman. John Stotts had a daughter Mary "Polly" Stotts who married John Jude. The 1810 Surry Co., NC census shows the household for "John Jude" included males: 2 <10, 1 10-15, 1 = or >45 and females: 1 = or >45. Consequently, John Jude and his wife Mary, also known as Polly, were both born before 1765. They had two sons John and Peter who were born between 1801 and 1810 or about 1805 and another son Martin who was born between 1795 and 1800 or about 1798. John Jude's nearest neighbor was Peter Stotts. The census shows the household for "Peter Stots" included males: 1 = or >45 and females: 1 <10, 1 16-25, 1 = or >45. Consequently, Peter Stotts and his wife were both born before 1765. Some of his nearest neighbors included Richard Roberts, Jacob Stotts, Bazel Roberts and John Roberts. Since Stotts was an unusual name in the area, Jacob Stotts was likely a relative. His household consisted of 1 male 16-25 and 1 female 10-15. So, Jacob was born between 1785 and 1794 or about 1790 and his wife was born between 1794 and 1800 or about 1797. Since John Stotts was born about 1775 and Jacob Stotts was born about 1790, it is likely Jacob was the son or brother of John Stotts. The household for Richard Roberts included males: 3 <10, 1 = or >45 and females: 2 10-15, 2 16-25, 1 26-44, 1 = or >45. Consequently, Richard Roberts and his wife were both born before 1765. Another very near neighbor was Bazel Roberts. His household consisted of males: 1 <10, 1 26-44 and females 2 <10, 1 26-44. Consequently, Bazel and his wife were both born about 1775. Since Richard Roberts was born before 1765 and Bazel Roberts was born about 1775, Bazel was likely the son or brother of Richard Roberts. The 1820 Grayson Co., VA census shows the household for "Polly Jude" included males: 2 10-15, 1 16-25 and females: 1 = or >45. Consequently, Polly was born on or before 1775 and her oldest son Martin was born between 1795 and 1804 or about 1800 and her other sons John and Peter were born between 1805 and 1810 or about 1808. When Polly's son Peter married in Pike Co., KY in 1831, "Mary Frederick" gave permission for her son "Peter Frederick" to get married. Polly is a nickname for Mary. The 1830 Pike Co., KY census shows the household for Margaret Stotts included males: 1 20-29 and females: 1 10-14, 1 40-49, 1 60-69. Consequently, Margaret was born about 1765. Since there were no other males in the household about the same age as Margaret, it appears she was a widow which suggests her husband died before 1830. Also listed in this household is a male who was born about 1805 who was probably Margaret Stotts' son John Stotts, III. Her maiden name and her parents are unknown. It has been suggested that her husband's name was John Stotts, II; however, Margaret's marriage record has not been found. Even though it only remains a suggestion that Margaret Stotts' husband was named John Stotts, II, the 1793 Wythe Co., VA personal property tax list included two men who both were identified as John Stotts. Consequently, it is reasonable to conclude John Stotts, who was born about 1750, had a son named John Stotts, II, who was born before 1772. It appears John Stotts, II was Margaret's husband. Margaret's closest neighbor was Polly Collins who was the daughter of Olive "Ollie" (Stotts) Roberts and Polly was the niece of John Stotts (born 1755). This is likely the same Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins who married Peter Frederick or Jude in 1831 in Pike Co., KY. The census entry for "Polly Collins" included males: 2 <5 and females: 1 20-29. Consequently, Polly was born between 1801 and 1810 or about 1805 and she had two sons under the age of 5 indicating they were born about 1803. Another close neighbor was John Jude's son John Frederick or Jude who was born about 1803 and was listed as "John Jude". The census entry for John Frederick or Jude included males: 1 <5, 1 20-29 and females: 1 5-9, 1 15-19. Consequently, John was born between 1801 and 1810 or about 1805. The 1840 Pike Co., KY census shows the household for "John Jude" included males: 1 <5, 2 5-9, 1 40-49 and females: 2<5, 1 20-29. Consequently, John was born between 1791 and 1800 or about 1795. Since later censuses show John was born about 10 years later about 1805, the enumerator must have checked the wrong age bracket for John. The following entry is found in the Pike Co., KY order book B 3-18 covering years 1831-1843: "Ordered that a spa be awarded against Joseph Bevins Thomas Cannaday John Jones & Mary Fredrick to appear hear at our September term to show cause why Jacob Fredrick Collins [x's crossed over the name Frederick] Andrew Collins James Collins John Fredrick and Olley Fredrick poor children shall not be bound out according to law." The exact date of this entry is not identified, but information supports the conclusion that it was about 1837 since her daughter Nancy was not included in the order and she was born in 1837. In conclusion, Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins-Frederick or Jude had two husbands who both died before her. Her first husband whose last name was Collins remains unidentified and died before the 1830 census. Her second husband was Peter Frederick or Jude who died about 1837. Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins-Frederick or Jude who was identified on the entry as "Mary Fredrick" was a widow and apparently could not support her children on her own after her husband Peter died about 1837. It was common during this era for a court to subpoena a widow who could not financially support her children, thus she was issued a court order to prove she was able to do so. Evidently, she was able to keep some of her Frederick or Jude children including Olley mentioned above and moved in with her mother Olive "Ollie" (Stotts) Roberts. This is supported by the 1840 Russell Co., VA census when Polly was living with her mother Olive "Olley" Roberts. Polly was also identified on the following 1850 Russell Co., VA census entry: Polly Jude age 41 b. Grayson Co., VA Olly Jude age 17 female b. Logan Co., VA Nancy Jude age 13 b. Logan Co., VA William R. Jude age 8 b. Russell Co., VA Sarah A. Roberts age 14 b. KY Charlotte Roberts age 10 b. Russell co., VA Peggy Roberts age 7 b. Russell Co., VA Olly Roberts age 85 b. NC Since William R. Jude shown above was 8 yrs. old in 1850, he was born about 1842. Since Peter died before the 1840 census, this suggests he was not the son of Peter Frederick or Jude. This may explain why William Riley Collins was not identified after the 1850 census as a Frederick or Jude, but as a Collins. No other information has been found regarding Polly's daughter Olive "Ollie/Olley/Olly" Jude. Polly's daughter Nancy Jude married James McHenry Prince in Lawrence Co., KY on 3-29-1855. Polly's son John Frederick or Jude who was previously mentioned on the Pike Co., KY order book as John Frederick is later identified on the 1850 Wayne Co., VA census as John Jude age 17 (born 1-7-1832) living in the household of James Starr. James Starr was a wealthy man who never had any children of his own, but he helped raise other people's children who were not able to do so by themselves. John Frederick or Jude married Nancy Anne (Staton). The following is additional information about Polly's children by an unidentified man with the surname Collins: 1850 Pike Co., KY census: #156 Jacob Collins age 26 VA (household of Martin Fulkerson) #716 Andrew Collins 26 VA Elizabeth (Smith) 24 KY Amanda J. 4 KY Wm. M. 2 KY This Andrew Collins was a close neighbor to Joseph Bevins who was listed in the previously mentioned Pike Co, KY order book. The following information details conclusions based on all the previous facts mentioned: John Frederick or Jude who was born 1832 was identified on the aforementioned subpoena about 1843 as "John Frederick". Later he was listed as "John Jude" on the 1850 census. His father Peter Frederick or Jude married in 1831 in Pike Co., KY using the name Peter Frederick when he married "Polly" Collins. Collins was the last name of Polly's first husband whose first name remains unidentified. As the 1850 Russell Co., VA census shows, Polly's mother was identified as Olive Roberts. Olive was a Stotts before she married Jacob Roberts; consequently, the maiden name of Peter's wife Polly was Roberts when she first married the man with the surname Collins. If these conclusions are not nebulous enough there is another fact that can't be ignored and may lead to other conclusions. When Peter Frederick or Jude's father John Jude who was born about 1765 was identified on the 1810 Surry Co., NC census as "John Jude", his nearest neighbor was Peter Stotts; consequently, Peter Frederick or Jude's father John Jude had to be connected somehow to Peter Stotts. In my opinion, John Jude may have named his son Peter after this Peter Stotts, which may imply Peter Stotts was somehow related to John Jude's wife Mary "Polly" (Stotts), but according to oral family history, her maiden name may have been Jackson. Based on the information just mentioned, her last name was probably Stotts. Please e-mail me if you have any thoughts or conclusions on all this information. According to Jude family history handed down for many generations, the Jude family came to Eastern KY and SW WV from the New River Valley. The New River runs through Surry Co., NC and Grayson Co., VA. In summary, John Stotts' age was identified on the following censuses: 1810 about 1775, 1820 before 1775 and 1830 about 1755. The earliest census in 1810 indicated John Stotts was born about 1775. This is in conflict to the age on the 1820 census as well as the 1830 census which stated he was born about 1755; however, his pension application submitted in 1829 indicated he was born about 1750, which confirms his age on the 1830 census, which indicated he was born about 1755. Even though there may be conflicting information about his age, usually the oldest is more correct; however, in this case, his age in 1830 is confirmed by his pension application in 1829. Consequently, his age in the 1830 census is probably more accurate. In conclusion, John Stotts was probably born about 1750. John Stotts' last name has also been spelled as Stotes, Stites, Stutes or Stoots.
