Notes
a. Continued:   Mary (Stotts) Jude was the daughter of the Revolutionary War Veteran John
Stotts and his unidentified wife. John Stotts was originally from the
New River Valley in Virginia before he moved to the Tug River Valley in
Central Appalachia where he was identifed on records in both Pike Co., KY
and neighboring Logan Co., VA. According to his Revolutionary War
pension application he was from Surry Co., NC and he was listed on the
1790 Surry Co., NC tax list. His daughter Mary married John Jude and
they were identified on the 1810 Surry Co., NC census.
The 1810 Surry Co., NC census shows the household for "John Jude"
 included males: 2 <10, 1 10-15, 1 = or >45 and females: 1 = or >45.
Consequently, John Jude and his wife Mary, also known as Polly, were both
born before 1765. They had two sons John and Peter who were born between
1801 and 1810 or about 1805 and another son Martin who was born between
1795 and 1800 or about 1798. John Jude's nearest neighbor was Peter
 Stotts.
The 1820 Grayson Co., VA census shows the household for "Polly Jude"
 included males: 2 10-15, 1 16-25 and females: 1 = or >45.
Consequently, Polly was born on or before 1775 and her oldest son Martin
was born between 1795 and 1804 or about 1800 and her other sons John and
Peter were born between 1805 and 1810 or about 1808.
According to these censuses the 1810 census shows Mary was born before
1765 and the 1820 census shows she was born before 1775. Her last son
Peter was born about 1808 and if she was about 40 years old when she had
him in 1808, then she was about 1768. Consequently, it was likely she
was born about 1770. However, it is possible she was born as early as
1765. Since Mary last identified on her son John's marriage record and
 was not
found on the 1830 census, she likely died between 1825 and 1830 or about
 1828.
According to oral family history the earliest member of the Jude family
who came to the Tug River Valley of Central Appalachia was John Jude who
was also known as John Frederick. He came to eastern Kentucky before
1825 with renowned pioneer Moses Stepp from the New River Valley. John's
brothers Martin and Peter also used the alias surname Frederick. Their
father John Jude was identified on the 1810 Surry Co., North Carolina
census and according to that census he was born before 1765. The New
River flows through Surry County, NC. John's nearest neighbor was Peter
Stotts who was probably a brother or son of John Stotts. John Jude died
before the 1820 census when his wife Mary or "Polly" Jude was identified
on the 1820 Grayson County, Virginia census which suggests John Jude died
about 1815. In 1825 Mary was identified as "Mary Frederick" when she
gave permission for her son "John Frederick" to get married in Pike Co.,
KY. Since Mary was no longer using the Jude surname and was using a
different surname, it implies she married again to a man whose surname
was Frederick. When her son John was listed on the 1880 Pike Co., KY
census as "John Frederick", he indicated that his father was born in
Germany. He was likely referring to his step father which supports the
theory his mother married an unidentified German immigrant with the
surname Frederick or "Friedrich" after her husband John Jude had died.
In order to honor their stepfather, John and his brothers Martin and
Peter used their stepfather's surname as their own, but most of their
descendants eventually switched back to their original surname which was
 Jude.
The Jude family was closely associated with the family of John Stotts who
was a Revolutionary War veteran who also came from the New River Valley.
John Stotts was born in 1750 since he stated on his pension application
in 1829 that he was about 80 years old. In 1825 when John Frederick or
Jude married Martha "Patty" Boney in Pike Co., KY, the witnesses included
John Stotts and John Stotts' stepsons Silas P. Ooten and Levi Ooten.
John Stotts had married his second wife "Anne Whootan" in Surry Co., NC
before they came to the Tug River Valley. Due to the close association
between John Stotts and the Jude family, it is logical to conclude John
Stotts was probably the grandfather of John Frederick or Jude and
explains why he was a witness on the marriage record which implies he was
probably also the father of John Frederick or Jude's mother Mary. Martha
"Patty" Boney was a daughter of a French Huguenot immigrant named Joseph
Boner/Boney who was first married to Sally Stotts before he later married
Martha's mother Sarah Mullins. Sally Stotts was probably also a daughter
of John Stotts. Also, John Jude and his wife Mary had a son who was
named Peter. It is likely the source for Peter's name was Peter Stotts
who was probably the brother or uncle to Mary and as previously mentioned
was their closest neighbor on the 1810 Surry Co., NC census. Peter
Frederick or Jude married Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins in 1831 who was
probably a widow and had married an unidentified man with the surname
Collins. She was listed on the 1830 Pike Co., KY census as "Polly
Collins" and her nearest neighbor was Margaret Stotts who was possibly
the widow of John Stotts, II. One of her other closest neighbors was
John Frederick or Jude who was listed as "John Jude". Other close
neighbors included Levi Ooten and his brother Jordan Ooten who were the
stepsons of John Stotts. Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins-Frederick or
Jude was the daughter of Jacob Roberts and Olive "Ollie" Stotts. Olive
was a sister of John Stotts and their parents were Andrew Stotts and his
wife Mary whose maiden name is unknown. Andrew Stotts fought in the
Revolutionary War from Montgomery Co., VA and he was also a veteran of
Lord Dunmore's War. His name is recorded as early as 1771 when he was
included on the List of Tithables for Botetourt Co., VA. He was last
listed in 1797 on a deed filed in Wythe Co., Virginia when he and his
wife Mary granted property to their son John Stotts. Since this was the
last document recorded for Andrew and Mary and since they were getting
older and transferred their land to their oldest son, they probably died
soon afterwards or about 1800. Andrew's surname has also been found
spelled as STOT, STOLZ, STOTT and STOOT. His descendants' names have
been found spelled as STOTTS or STOOTS.
