Note: Dear Dean, Since talking to you last, I got very busy and had to, for the time being, put aside my promise to you concerning more information on myself and my wife. Yesterday, I was at the PC and simply punched up "Cochrun". Lo and behold there was the beautiful website that you told me was coming. Congratulations! What a wonderful job you did. You should be very proud of your work. I know that I am proud of you. Many of us, including myself, have talked about doing what you accomplished, but just never got to it. I know that it must have been a painstaking effort. You've spurred me on to complete my promise to you. I noticed that there was nothing on the tree before Samuel Wesley Cochrun. Was there a problem finding info, or what? Following is a sketch of what I have been doing during my 73 years. Take from it what you need. If you need anything else, let me know: Albert Ross Cochrun, Jr. was born at White Cross Hospital, Columbus, Ohio August 26, 1930. Most of his family knew him by his nicknames, "Bud" or "Buddy". In 1941, He became an original member of the Columbus Boy Choir, Columbus, Ohio, which is now the American Boy Choir. He exaggerated his age a bit and joined the Army at age 16. He served in WWII in the Marshall Islands, South Pacific. Upon discharge from the Army, He held various jobs while determining what he was going to do with his life. Due to his father's (Albert Ross Cochrun, Sr.) influence, who had a short career in vaudeville and his musical past, he decided to launch a career in show business. He studied voice in Columbus, Ohio for one year and moved to New York City. There he studied voice, dance and drama. He performed in and around New York for two years. Some of this time he spent with an off Broadway theater company. In 1954, he met Marilyn Cochrun, also a singing performer. They were married two months later in Marilyn's home area, Portland, Maine. After marriage, they performed as a "Sweetheart" singing act throughout New England, mainly at summer resorts. Their only child, Kevin Ross, was born in 1955. They ceased to perform together in 1959 when Marilyn founded a nursery school (Allynn Nursery School) in the Portland area. Al went to work for the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. in Portland. He had an inner desire to work in radio because of his experience with the Armed Forces Radio Service while in the army. At first, he worked weekends and summers, then he left the telephone company to work full-time at a local radio station (WPOR). After two years, while Lynn's school was growing, he accepted a position at a Boston radio station. He worked there for two years. He, at the same time, worked at night as the House Master of Ceremonies at a large Night club and restaurant in Boston, the Monticello, which was at that time the largest on the east coast. Missing his family and weary of commuting to Boston, he returned to Maine. In 1962, he entered Gorham Teachers College, Gorham Maine, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. In 1966, he accepted a teaching post in a nearby large school district. During this tenure, he and his wife planned to open a private un-graded school, which would be integrated with the already existing nursery school. They named it, Allynn Day School II & III. This came to pass in 1970. With a Master's degree from the University of Southern Maine in Elementary Education and Administration, he became classroom teacher and headmaster of the new school. The school was quite successful and flourished until the economy sagged in the mid-70's. He returned to his original position at the school district where he started in 1966. Attending school nights and summers, he earned another Master's degree in Adult Education at University of Southern Maine. This enabled him to teach adults at night, as well as children during the day. His academic area in adult education was English grammar and composition. During the above period, he was soloist for the First Church of Christ Scientist, Portland, Maine for fourteen years. In 1987, he underwent open heart surgery. Immediately after, he founded and organized a community concert band, "Fanfare", made up of local amateur musicians. He nurtured his group from 8 members to 26, who in 1991 performed 9 concerts throughout Scotland, including a performance in the Edinburgh Festival Parade; the only band representing the USA. From 1985 to 1992, he was a member of a repertory acting company in Portland, in which he performed in numerous productions as a character actor. He retired in 1992 and moved to Arizona, where he soon after became Commander of the local American Legion Post. He is presently Chaplain of that post for the third year. Al and Marilyn are enjoying the Arizona climate. He has almost completed writing a mystery novel. His credo is, "Don't let anyone put limitations on you".
