Van Kirk "Hi, I am Jarrod Van Kirk, many of y ou don't know me, but Al was very important to my whole family. My gra ndpa Van Kirk died 44 years ago. My Grandma, Margaret Van Kirk, starte d to date Al 35 years ago, when I was just 1 year old. So, he has been a p art of my family for as long as I can remember. MY whole family thinks o f him as part of the family. So, I just wanted to share some of my fav orite memories of my "Grandpa Al". He was kind: He would play the war c ard game with me for hours at a time when I was a child. I remember him w alking us around the yard at our family cabin to pick-up sticks for a c amp fire. I remember him making me butter, peanut butter and marshmallo w sandwiches, and he always told me that the butter makes it better. I l earned what seemed like dozens of ways to play solitaire from him, and p laying them for hours on end. He was stubborn: I remember watching him r ake the cabin's front yard and throwing the grass clippings on the fire e very year until he was about 80. He did it because he felt that it nee ded to be done., regardless of what anyone else thought. He was very re ligious: No matter where he was, until the last few years, he went to c hurch regularly. He attended here in Ellwood, up in MI when visiting o ur family and even in Tidioute, PA while at the cabin. He never missed i t. How many of you here have bought raffle tickets from him for his chu rch? I know I did. Because of all of these reasons and many more, I wi ll always think of him as my Grandpa Al and I am going to miss him very m uch.
Note:   Al and Grandma were never married. They dated and kept seperate house s for about 25 years. Al served in World War II in the Army-Air Force. H e served in India and Burma, but mostly Burma. He wa
