I wasn't quite ten years old. Grandma Lena wanted the pictures taken and someone came in to take them. The casket was in the "front room" at Grandad George's - (that's what they did back then.) I remember Pa Tom (John Thomas, Jennie Thomas Smith's father) taking me on his knee and telling me that I should not be afraid of Grandpa Jim - it was okay that he was gone. He lived with Granddad and Grandma (George and Jennie Smith). I probably have more pictures of them - but I am sure that Jim Smith would also have more too. I remember going to Towanda to visit Grandpa Jim and Grandma Lena on a Sunday afternoon - in my dress and being told to be sure to behave myself and be quiet. The house was dark - the shades were pulled to keep the furniture and rugs from fading, and they had a clock in the dining room that had chimes that struck the hour and quarter hours. I really didn't like having to sit quietly on the couch - it scratched! and there were no toys to play with. When Grandma Lena couldn't stay by herself any longer, she also came to live with Granddad George and Grandma Jennie. By then Pa Tom was also gone. Both Grandpa Jim and Grandma Lena were small people - I doubt they were much over 5'3 or 5'4. Grandpa Jim was slightly built and had a gold tooth, which was popular in those days. (Grandpa George had one too at that time.) When Grandpa Jim died, his body was taken to Murrysville for burial. When I was about 5 years old, we went to Murrysville to visit Uncle James and Aunt Ruth. While we were there, we also visited Aunt Lidah, but needless to say, I don't remember it too much. I do remember, we stayed with Uncle James's (Duane was still at home ). The men went down the road and out to the field. I walked down the road barefoot, but carried my shoes. I sat down on the edge of the road to put on my shoes so I could walk to the field. While I was putting on my shoes, Duane came along on his bicycle and had me get on and he took me back to the house. When we got back, we realized I had sat in the tar on the road, got it all over my butt, my legs, and his bicycle! My cousin, Kay Fairchild Hamlin has also researched the Smith family - and has a lot on info. Jarrod - have you been in contact with her? We are planning another family reunion next year on August 22nd. Please plan to come - there will be more info later. Right now, we are considering having the noon meal catered - possibly for $15.00 per person. Again-more info later. Jarrod - I imagine you are related through Jim - who do you b elong to? I never got to know Jim's children very well. I met Cheryl, Jimmy, and Michael, but don't know if I ever met any of the others (I think there were more weren't there?) Hope to hear from you again. Love ( Aunt) Elaine

Note:   Per James T. Smith Jr., his grandparents (Jim and Lena) used to winter in Tampa and Cuba. They had a farm in Newlonsburg before they bought the farm in Murrysville. They took vegetables from the far
