Notes
a. Note:   r mother's obit. H e met Grandma as she was a neighbor. ********************************** ******************************* **** From: Jack Wurzel [mailto:jaws11@@a ttbi.com] Sent: Sun 6/22/2003 12:20 PM To: Van Kirk, Jarrod Subject: E -mail Jarrod, nice hearing from you. Concerning your e-mail about worki ng with your Grandpa and Uncle Bill. I did work with them at the Standa rd Horse Nail, in New Brighton from 1957 thru 1958 then again from 1962 t hru 1964. They were both machinists there and I was an apprentice. They b oth showed me a lot about machine shop work and procedures. They were f un to work with and were a lot of help to me. Your "Grandpa Paul" mov ed from where our camps are now to work in the Beaver Valley. It was he , who let my Dad know about the place being for sale that my Dad bought i n 1958. Paul took me into Station Run and showed me where the deer cros sed the run the first time I went hunting up in Tidioute. My Dad had to w ork . I think I was around 18 years old. We stayed in the current locat ion where your camp is now. It was a converted chicken coup. Luke Post h ad bought the house (Emery's) from your Grandpa and Grandma and was liv ing there. Your Uncle Bill was more meticulous as a machinist than Pau l, but that is not to say any better. Your Grandpa was either the Secr etary Treasurer of the local union or the Recording Secretary , I can't r emember which. It was an "amalgamated local" which means that it was c omprised of other business's that had I.A.M.A.W. (International Associa tion of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) members in the area. I think i t was local #216. Some were from the local Westinghouse Plant in Beaver a nd some from the Keystone Bakery in Bridgewater. Once in a while we wou ld have union get togethers at local area restaurants and our wives wou ld be invited Irma and your Grandma were there. Your Grandpa and Grand ma also owned a local restaurant and bar in Darlington, Beaver Co., PA f or a few years. Irma and I used to go there once in a while to see them . I remember your Dad and Uncle Larry both as kids. Time sure does fly . I hope this helps a little. The next time I see you maybe I will re member some more things to tell you.   Guy's nice hearing from you. That's about a good of picture your gonna g et unless I go down and take a picture of it and E-mail it to you. Look s about the same today. I understand one of young Bob Merricks boys, I believe Peter is a historian of sorts. You may want to call them and ask t o talk to him. He may have more info. You can mention my name if you wish. http://www.stanho.com/contact/ I also understand there's a picture i n the DeBence museum in Franklin, PA http://www.debencemusicworld.com/ of the Horse Nail. Jimmy Young told me that story. (Jim's Sunoco in N.B. )
I do have a framed black and white 9 1/2''X 19" of their 1872 until 19 38 horse drawn float taken in front of the office. Not suitable for E- mailing.
I think the float was made to commemorate New Brighton, PA's 100th anniversary
We used to live on Seventh Ave right behind the plant, in fact that is w here I was born. Less than 50 feet from the'' Nail Mill'' as it was kno wn then. We lived there until 1949. I worked with your Granpa/Dad and U ncle Bill from 1957 until 1964 with a few years taken out for being in t he Army. I learned a lot from those guys.
  Thanks Jack. Take care.
