Note: "THE SETTLEMENT OF PHILIPSBURGH" - By MacKenzie The land east of the Saw Mill River between Yonkers and Elmsford was settled later (than 1700), and almost exclusively by families of English origin. In the second quarter of the eighteenth century the extensive farms of John & William Underhill, Capt. Gilbert Drake, Joshua Odell, Caleb, Joseph, John, Thomas and Nehemiah Tompkins, Israel Hunt and John Rossell occupied a large part of this territory. Later they were joined by Gilbert & David Pugsley....... In 1783 he sold his lease and improvements to his brother David and in September went to New Brunswick where he lived on Long Island in the St John river.
