Elroy J. & Ruth Irene Kaub: Ernest and Irene were married April 12, 1919 at her parents home in the Tauy neighborhood just northeast of Ottawa, Franklin Co., Kansas. They had four sons; Elroy J. born Aug. 13, 1920, Frank Clifford born July 12, 1922, and (twins) Floyd Ira and Fred Irvin born Sept. 27, 1927. All the boys were born around the Ottawa, Franklin Co., KS area.
Ernest was a very handsome young man, about 5'9" tall, of average frame, with dark brown hair and brown eyes that, quite often, had a spark of mischief in them. He loved to tell stories and boasted of belonging to the Liar's Club of the North Baptist Church, in Ottawa, KS. Once he was unanimously voted the Champion Liar of the club for a tall tale.
Ernest was a stockman, dairyman, farmer, self-employed carpenter, and worked for the railroad for about 5 years. He attended school only through the sixth grade, but that did not slow him down, much. He was a member of the North Baptist Church in Ottawa, then joined the Tauy Baptist Church, and then went back to the North Baptist. He was a past President of Centropolis Phone Company, Centropolis, Douglas Co., KS.
Ernest often dressed in overalls and walked with a limp, so he used a cane which he held in his left hand. This limp was because of an accident while he was working for the Santa Fe railroad. He was teamed up with another worker to do "sledging", which was working with a sledge hammer on the cars hitches or the ties. The workers took turns "sledging" and Ernest was hit on the knee, by accident, while the other man was hammering. Later on, he was thrown from a "bronco" and that probably added to the extent of his knee injury.
While working outdoors one day, he bent down to open a gate and a weed poked him in the eye, leaving him blind in that eye. For awhile he was completely blind because cataracts caused his "good" eye to go blind, also, but he was able to have surgery and regained sight in one eye again.
Ernest had dairy cows at one time and kept as many as 22 cats who shared the milk with him! He said he felt it was cheaper to keep cats and feed them some milk than to lose grain and eggs to the mice and rats. But, he was also fond of cats.
Foods that Ernest loved were fried chicken, Redskin peanuts, watermelon, cheese, orange pop. persimmons, and ice cream. Ernest also liked to eat fried or pickled chickens' feet. He called them "Scratchers".
Ernest and Irene lived in several homes after they were married, most were rented. When they first were married in April 1919, they lived southeast of Ottawa, about 1/4 mi. south of Highland Cemetery. This is where Elroy J. was born on August 13, 1920.
They moved northeast of Ottawa, to the "Smith Place". It was 1 mi. north, about 3 1/2 mi. east and on the north side of the road. This is just east of Rodney Fritt's farm, once Albert Fritt's farm, but the house is gone, now. This is where they lived when Frank C. was born, on July 12, 1922.
Ernest and Irene then bought a house on 530 Mulberry Street in Ottawa. While living here, the twins, Floyd I. and Fred I. were born on Sept. 27, 1927. They lived on Mulberry Street several years. Ernest worked at the "Shop" for the Sante Fe Railroad. Due to rough times, Ernest lost his job and they eventually lost this home.
From Mulberry Street, they moved to 20 acres by Tauy Creek, which they rented. This was 2 1/2 miles north of Greendale School, northeast of Ottawa. There he farmed, butchered beef & hogs and sold the meat. They lived here about one year. Elroy and Frank attended Fairmount Grade School while there.
They then moved 3 mi. north and 2 1/4 mi. west of Ottawa to rent "the Parker place" in the spring of 1932. This farm had 80 acres. While living here at the Parker place, all four of their boys attended Liberty Grade School. Elroy bought the farm, just 1/4 mi. east of this farm in 1949.
In 1939 Ernest & Irene they moved back to the "Smith Place" and Ernest continued farming. Elroy and Frank attended Ottawa High School.
In 1945 Ernest, Irene, Frank, Fred, and Floyd moved to the Lidiky place near Wellsville, located south of what is now the Baldwin exit off of I-35.
In the Fall of 1948, Ernest and Irene bought a farm. This was about 2 mi. east and 1 mi. north of Centropolis, in Douglas County, Kansas. They move there in the Spring of 1949. There, Ernest farmed and had a herd of Dairy cows.
Ernest like to tell about men fishing in the river at Lawrence. He said they would dive into the river hanging on a hay hook tied to a rope. They'd find catfish as big as a man and hook them. Then swim out and use a the rope with a horse or tractor and pull the catfish out of the river.
They both lived on their Centropolis farm until Ernest died in 1980. By this time, Irene's memory was poor and she was often confused, due to Alzheimer's , so she was moved to a nursing home in Ottawa.
Ernest was 87 years old when he died July 3, 1980 at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa, KS. He was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, northwest of Centropolis.
Irene was 89 years old when she died in the Ottawa Retirement Village, January 15,1985 in Ottawa, Kansas. She was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, beside Ernest. They were married 61 years.

Ernest Kaub bought 530 Mulberry St., Ottawa, Franklin Co., KS; Lots 6 & 8 and N. 10 ft. of Lot 10, Blk 28, Bowles, Sheldon and Topping's Addition for $3100, Franklin Co. Deed No. 127. He then was injured on the job with the Santa Fe RR. A co-worker accidently hit him on the knee with a sledge hammer while taking turns "sledging" while working for the RR. Ernest lost his job since he could not work. He took out a second mortgage in Jun 1934, but couldn't keep up with the bills. So in 1935 he sold the property.

 Anniversary Open House
An open house to honor the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kaub, Baldwin RFD 1, will be held from 2-4 p.m., Sunday at the North Baptist Church reception room. Relatives and friends of the couple are invited to attend.
Hosts at the event will be the Kaub's children, Elroy Kaub; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kaub; Mr. and Mrs. Fred; Kaub; and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Kaub, all of Ottawa.
Helen Irene Mulvany and Ernest Elroy Kaub were married April 12, 1919 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Mulvany, Ottawa RFD 2. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Oliver Potter who was pastor of the Tauy Baptist Church.
Kaub worked as a farmer and carpenter at Franklin, Osage and Douglas counties and at the Santa Fe car shops at Ottawa for seven years. Mrs. Kaub taught school at Douglas County before her marriage. They moved to their home near Baldwin in 1949. The couple has 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
 ------
Ernest Kaub loved Shirley Temple and bought two Cobalt blue Shirley Temple creamer sized milk pitchers circa 1943-1945 and gave them to his granddaughters, Carolyn and Dorothy Kaub, who still have those originals.
Ernest and Irene owned the land that was across the alley to the east of where they built the North Baptist Church at 413 E. Wilson St. in north Ottawa, KS. They sold the middle 1/3 to Frank Kaub about 1950 and Frank built a house on it, now 1010 Poplar. Fred bought the old house and 1/3 lot on the south end of that land which was 1002 Poplar. Fred bought it before he and Ruth married. Ernest and Irene donated the remaining third, north of Frank's house, for a North Baptist Church parsonage to be built on it. This story was told to me by Elroy and Fred Kaub.
