Notes
a. Note:   According to H. H. Ryland, in one of his Ryland Newsletters: during his youth, Andrew Ryland lived near Tulpehocken, in Berks County, in south-east Pennsylvania.
In the 1938 newsletter entitled "The Samuel Burkhart Rylands", H. H. Ryland writes:
"Andrew Ryland, as a boy, passed through the trying scenes of the Revolutionary War, as he was born [in 1767] near Tulpenhocken in Berks County. He often told his children how the English soldiers raided the section in which they lived, ransacked their homes and carried away anything they could use in the way of food, clothing and bed clothers. Sometime they would strip men of articles of clothing. He told about salt being so scarce and very difficult to procure; that the womena made pockets in their peticoats to carry salt in to keep the English from securing their small supplies of this article."

Please see the notes and media under Phoebe BURHART, the wife of Andrew RYLAND. Also see the notes under Nicholas BURKHART, the farther of Phoebe, and see the notes under Samuel BURKHART, a brother of Phoebe. Those note refer to Andrew RYLAND, because he assisted with the administration of the estate of Phoebe's father, Nicholas BURKHART, and Andrew also assisted with the administration of the estate of Samuel BURKHART, a brother of Phoebe.
[This note was added on February 9, 2014 by Samuel Wm Aylesworth, with appreciation to B. Antal who provided the information about Phoebe's father and brother.]

Further notes, from The Rylands Newsletter, 1935:
Andrew had a grant of 100 acres of land in Huntington County, PA. [but it is probable that he NEVER lived on that land]. He sold this and bought land in Whitemarsh Township, [Montgomery County], near Philadelphia not far from the Barren Hill Church [near modern Conshohocken, just north of Philadelphia, near the Schuykill River]. Here Andrew built a mill. The following have been given as the names of his children: William, Samuel Burkhart, Rachel Ryland Snyder, Sarah Ryland Kulp, Mary Ann Ryland English, Catherine Ryland Coulsen, Margaret Ryland Showawer and Mrs. Elizabeth Ryland Cox. Who has the old Andrew Ryland Bible? This would be a great held in settling several questions. The land owned by Andrew Ryland now forms a part of the Andorra Nurseries, which cover eleven hundred acres of land."
  ===
  From the 1938 Newsletter:
"By trade he was a miller. he had a grist mill and manufactured flour, doing an extensive business for one in those times. In this work he was assisted by his two sons later on. This mill was located on Wlssahicken Creek."

"JA", another family member has completed extensive research on Paulus Reylandt/Ryland, his wife Louisa and their family. This family member has requested that he be identified simply as "JA" and his sources be identified by reference to to his JA's posting on Genforum at http://genforum.genealogy.com/ryland/messages/127.html
  Regarding Andrew Ryland, JA writes:
He was born February 22, 1767. [Recent findings indicate he was born on July 23 1767. SWA.] He married Phoebe Burkhart, March 17, 1793, in Berks County, Pennsylvania. He died September 25, 1823 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He is buried in Barren Hill Lutheran Cemetery, St. Peter´s Lutheran Congregation, Lafayette Hill, Montgomery County.
He was old enough to sign a document in his father´s probate, the administration bond, dated March 2, 1789 (see below), so he had to be 21 years old by then, so his birth year fits.

"JA" also makes the following comment upon reviewing Tax Records in Hopewell , Huntington County, Pennsylvania:
"John´s brothers James and Andrew never appear in the Hopewell Township tax lists .... Though they owned property in Huntingdon County, they probably never settled it" [For the complete set of notes regarding John's taxation records, see the Notes-section for John himself elsewhere in this family tree/database. SWA]
In the same Notes, "JA" writes:
"John´s Brothers´ Property in Huntingdon County
1791 Jun 27: Andrew Ryland buys 100 acres.
1792 Jan 16: James Ryland buys 80 acres, Hopewell Township, (date of return: 1800 Dec 12, 77.100 acres).
 http://www.footnote.com/image/3195350/Ryland/
It´s not clear that Andrew or James settled on his land. It is probable that John did not own land. He may have worked his brothers´ property. His Inventory and Appraisement mentions a landlord, but not by name. But more research needs to be done."

"JA" offers the following comment about determining the list of all of Paul and Louisa´s offspring:
"They are all named in their father´s probate records in two documents, dated December 19, 1789 and December 30 and 31, 1789. The documents specify eight children - the deed using the number eight - at the moment of Paul´s death. (Sarah his daughter predeceased him, making nine in total.) Also, on March 27, 1790, they are named in the land sale of Paul´s property, after his decease, specifying eight heirs (minus Sarah) who are about to receive or who received their fair share, before John the eldest sold the land. Most of the nine were born in Cumru Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Paul seems to have acquired land in Robeson Township, Berks County, in 1765, so maybe a child or two was born there. Their dates of birth are approximate, in most cases." [For further information about the Probate of the estates of Paul and Louisa, see the NOTES-section for Paulus Reylandt/Paul Ryland in this family tree/database. SWA]

In 2007, Samuel Wm. Aylesworth and his wife Diane visited St. Peter's Church and located the headstones for both Andrew Ryland and his wife Phoebe. We mentioned to the church staff that there was some debate in the family as to whether the Ryland have an English or a German background. The staff said strong, "If they were attending this church in those early years, they were German. This was a German speaking church!."
We also gathered a variety of documents regarding Andrew and his family from the local Genealogical Society. These are now on file at our home, and the information therein will be added to this family tree during the month and years ahead.
A sign in front of the St Peter's Church reads:
  St. Peter's Church
Lutheran, founded 1752 by Henry Melchior Muhlenberg. From steeple of original church, May 20, 1778, Gen. Lafayette gave orders for battle against British in old churchyard. Here he organizes his famous retreat to Matson Ford, saving himself and 2200 Continental troops from capture. (Pennsylvania Historical and Musum Commission).
