Notes
a. Note:   The following note relates to the childhood of Albert H. "Bert" ELLISON and his brother David William"Bill" ELLISON. It is offered to clarify the connection between the ELLISON family and the family of Joseph KIRK and his wife Matilda KIRK (nee DENT).
As the compiler of this family tree/database, I have a direct relationship with Rosemary ELLISON who married Samuel Clarence NICKLE Jr. in 1945 in Calgary, Alberta. This Sam and Rosemary were my Uncle and Aunt.
David E. H. ELLISON was the grandfather of Rosemary ELLISON who married Samuel Clarence NICKLE Jr.
This David E.H. ELLISON was married to Annie DENT, the daughter of John DENT and Ann Carrick GRASSBY. Apparently this couple had only three children:
 (i) son Alberta H. ELLISON Sr (born 1890 in England) and
(ii) son David William "Bill" ELLISON (born perhaps around 1890 in England or in Ireland -- various records found refer either to England or to Ireland.), and
(iii) a daughter about whom I have located no information to date.
Apparently David E. H. ELLISON died very young, but no date of date is currently known. According to family history -- as shared with me by B. King-Varcoe -- the wife Annie ELLISON (nee DENT) was not able to look after two boys, and so she placed them in a children's home of some sort. I assume this means she kept and looked after the daughter.
The family story, unconfirmed at this time, is that a sister of Annie ELLISON (nee DENT) arranged to take the two boys from the 'children's home' and to raise them in her own home, along with her own husband and children. The maiden-name of the 'adopting mother' (my term) was Matilda DENT. At the time the two boys were taken into her hom, Matilda was already married to a Joseph KIRK, and they had four children: two boys and two girls (William, Dora, Emily and John).
Thus, the two sons of David E. H. ELLISON were raised by their aunt and uncle Matilda and Joseph KIRK and with four of their cousins, who were all of similar age. Thus, of course, the new expanded family consisted of:
 (i) Joseph KIRK - father
(ii) Matilda KIRK (nee DENT) - mother
(iii) William Edwin KIRK - son - born abt 1885
(iv) Dora KIRK - daughter - born abt 1887
 (v) Emily Kate KIRK - daughter - born abt 1889
(vi) John Arthur KIRK - son - born about 1894
(vi) Albert H "Bert" ELLISON - adopted son (formally or informally) - born abt 1890
(vii) David William "Bill" ELLISON - adopted son (formally or informally) - born abt 1892
Joseph and Matilda KIRK owned and lived at a flour mill called "Ellerby Mill" and "The Mill House in Ellerby, Yorkshire." Thus some of the critical early years of these two ELLISON-boys were spent at and around the Mill House in Ellerby, Yorkshire, England.
Albert H. "Bert" ELLISON Sr. was the father of my aunt Rosemary ELLISON (later NICKLE), and David William "Bill" ELLISON was Rosemary's uncle.
[This first note was added by Samuel William AYLESWORTH on January 16, 2014, based on tentative information shared with Sam by B. King-Varcoe, who is a grand-daughter of the Dora KIRK listed immediately above. My thanks and appreciation to B. King-Varcoe for sharing this family history..]
  ==================
Family recollections are that Albert H. "Bert" ELLISON Sr came to Canada in about 1906.
In 1936, he made a trip back to England and spent time with family members at the Mill House in Ellerby, Yorkshire. A number of pictures from that trip were initially passed to Alberta H. ELLISON Jr, and are currently held by B. King-Varcoe in Ontario, Canada. She would welcome assistance clarifying the identity of some of those in the pictures.
As part of the same 1936 trip, Albert H. "Bert" ELLISON Sr also visited the opening of Vimy Ridge Memorial.
[This note was added by Samuel Wm. Aylesworth on January 16, 2014, with appreciation to B. King-Varcoe who shared this info with me. ]
