Notes
a. Note:   Notes by Samuel Wm. Aylesworth, compliler of this family tree/database:
Thomas Stanton would be one of my great-great-grandfathers on my mother's side of the family.
We know for certain that a Thomas STANTON married Rachel Ann RYLAND in Pennsylvani in 1843 and that I descend from this couple. However, to date we have found little information about Thomas Stanton himself, his ancestors and about some of his other descendants.
We know that Thomas, his father Richard and his brother John immigrated from England to the USA together and eventually moved to Schyulkill Haven in Pennsylvania, where Thomas married Rachel Ann Ryland. Thomas and Rachel Ann later moved to Canada (in about 1868) with some but not all of their family. John married a woman named Hannah and we believe that they too later moved to Canada in about 1868, but this is not proven. We know for certain that this Richard, Thomas and Rachel Ann, and John and Hannah are ancestors of mine.
We also know that Thomas, Rachel and their family settled in Thamesville, Ontario, Canada. While there one of their daughters, Martha Jane Stanton, married George Nickle. I descend from this couple as follows, and this lineage can be proven:
  1. Thomas Stanton and Rachel Ann Ryland
 2. Martha Jane Stanton and George Nickle
 3. Samuel Clarence Nickle and Olga Simsonson
 4. Agnes Alice Nickle and Robert Wesley Aylesworth (my parents)
 5. Myself, Samuel Wm. Aylesworth
Further, we have located the headstone for Thomas Stanton and Rachel Ann (Ryland) Stanton at Woodland Cemetery in London Ontario Canada. Notes are engraved on the same headstone relating to Richard Stanton and Esther and for John and Hannah. It is because of the headstones that we know that his father was named Richard STANTON and that Thomas had at least one brother named John STANTON. However, we are not certain whether Richard and John are actually buried in London Ontario or whether the comments on the headstone are there to honor them.
The headstone for Thomas and Rachel reads as follows:
"THOMAS son of RICHARD STANTON, Born May 18 1819, Died Mar 14 1884. .... RACHEL ANN Wife of THOMAS STANTON Born Jan 1, 1818, Died Nov 2, 1908."
  The engraving for Richard reads:
"In Memory of RICHARD STANTON, Died Oct 4 1871, Aged 90 years. 'The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord."
The engraving for John and Hannah reads:
"In Memory of JOHN STANTON, Died Feb 21, 1871, Aged 63 years ... and of HANNAH his wife, Died Dec 1, 1882 Aged 79 years." A verse in the middle of this inscription reads "Our life handgs by a slender thread which soon is cut and we are dead. Born not just of this light ... (difficult to read), We are here at noon and gone at night."
As noted, the headstone in London, Ontario, Canada, states that Richard died on Oct 4, 1871. The headstone does not say where he died, and the headstone is engraved "In Memory of Richard Stanton"; this suggests that he may have died elsewhere and his son Thomas was simply honoring his father when he inscribed Richard's name on the headstone in London Ontario. It is possible that Richard died in Pennsylvania after his sons immigrated to Canada. The same uncertainty applies to John. However, none of this is clear or proven.
On September 8th, 2008, we located an immigration record for the following Stanton family, who arrived in Boston Massachusetts from Liverpool England aboard the ship "Back Wolga" on June 7, 1837. The family included all of the following:
 - Richard, aged 50
 - Esther, aged 49
 - Anne, aged 32
 - John, aged 26
 - Thomas, aged 18
 - Mary, aged 15
 - Charlotte, aged 13 and
 - James, aged 12 (hard to read)
I am guessing (but could be wrong) that the Richard, John and Thomas listed in this immigration record are the same Richard, John and Thomas that I have firm information about, as my ancestors.
To support this guess, we can only provide the following data at this time:
 A) A Richard Stanton and his wife Esther are listed in the 1850 USA Census for Cass, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, where Thomas and Rachel Ann lived with their family.
 B) A John Stanton is listed on the same page with his wife Hannah, and we do know that 'my' John - the son of 'my' Richard - married a woman named Hannah, because these names are also found on the headstone in London Ontario.
 C) Thus, because we are certain about the names 'John and Hannah', and given that Richard and Esther are listed immediately below John and Hannah in the 1850 Census, we assume that the Richard and Esther who immigrated into the USA through Boston in 1837 is the same Richard and Esther who later lived in Schuylkill, Pennsylvania. We do realize, however, that this is an unproven assumption, and it could be wrong.
If we have correctly linked these various records, then 'my' Richard Stanton immigrated to the USA with a larger family than we were previously aware of. That is, Richard immigrated with 6 children rather than only 2, and Richard's wife Esther immigrated with him from England.
Richard is listed but Esther is NOT listed in the 1860 USA Census for Washington, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania. If this is the same Richard, then perhaps Esther died sometime between 1850 and 1860.
At this date we have no further information on the other 4 'supposed' children: Anne, James, Mary and Charlotte.
HOW MANY CHILDREN DID THOMAS STANTON AND RACHEL ANN RYLAND HAVE?
CENSUS and OTHER RECORDS RELATING TO THIS FAMILY
Other family researchers have referred to a larger number of children than we have been able to confirm. H. H. Ryland states that the couple had 13 children. Two other researchers list 12 children. My own findings, summarized below, suggest there were only 9 children, but there could be infant deaths we are not aware of.
The 1850 USA Census lists Thomas Stanton, his wife Rachel and three children: James 6, John 2 and Hester a newborn child.
The 1860 USA Census lists Thomas Stanton, his wife Rachel and six children: James 15, Hester 10, Annie 8, Thomas Jr 6, Edward 4 and Emma 2. John is not list in 1860; perhaps he died. If so, that would bring the total to seven (7) children.
  1871 Canada Census:
A listing of Thomas Stanton, Rachel Ann (Ryland) and their family is found in the 1871 Canada Census.
 - both Thomas the father and Rachel Ann the mother are listed as 52 years old.
The following seven (7) children are listed as present with the family at that time:
 - Henrietta, age 21
 - Rachel Ann (the daughter, not the mother), age 18 (probably "Annie" in the 1860 census)
 - Thomas Jr, age 16
 - Edward, age 14
 - Emma, age 13
 - Jerome, age 10 and
 - Martha, age 7 [this is my great-grandmother Martha Jane Stanton who married George Nickle. SWA]
So, compared to the 1860 Census, there were now two 'new' children, Jerome and Martha, bringing the total to nine.
Missing in the 1871 Canada Census are two children born in the USA:
 - James, who would have been about 26 if living at the time. Did he remain in the USA? It appears so.
 - John, who appears to have died between 1850 and 1860 (OR did he also remain in the USA? Not as likely.)
  1881 Canada Census:
A listing of Thomas Stanton and his family is also found in the 1881 Canada Census.
In this census, Thomas the father is listed as 61 and Rachel the mother is listed as 63.
Also, in this census only four of the children are listed as living with the parents:
 - Thomas Jr, age 26
 - Edward, age 24
 - Jerome, age 20 and
 - Martha Jane, age 17.
Missing from the seven (7) children listed in 1871 are:
 - Henrietta, who had married Francis BLACKWELL sometime prior to 1874
 - Rachel Ann, who had married Septimus POPE in 1873
 - Emma, who had married Arthur POPE in 1879
Three additional children suggested by other researchers:
Other researchers have listed three other children:
 - William George, said to have been born in 1844 as the first child. If so, he may have died in infancy as he is not listed in the 1850 census.
 - Mary Elizabeth, said to be a a twin to John, and born in 1848. Given that John appears to have died when he was young, perhaps there was a twin who died soon after birth. She is not listed in the 1850 census.
 - Charles Richard, said have been born in 1852, the same year as Rachel Ann. If so, he is not listed in the 1860 census and may also have died as an infant.
Just to be clear, to date we have found no evidence supporting the birth of these three children. However we HAVE included them in the list of children, pending further clarification.
(This note updated on Sept 6, 2011 by Samuel Wm. Aylesworth.)
