Note: In the 1850 and the 1860 USA Census records, James STANTON is listed as a son of Thomas STANTON and Rachel Ann RYLAND.
As of this date, the only other source I have found regarding a James STANTON son of Thomas and Rachel is the DAR application by Clotilde Stanton, see DAR Registration #138775. In that application she states her parents were Ellen ASHBURY and James Monroe STANTON, and that the parents of her father were Thomas STANTON and Rachel Ann RYLAND. Thus, James STANTON appears to be the James Monroe STANTON listed by Clotilde in her DAR application.
However, I've found no record of the marriage of James and Ellen, and no record of the births of their children.
Note that, in the DAR application, Clotilde says she was born in Paris France. This appears to be the same Clotilde who is listed in the 1900 and 1910 Census living in Philadelphia and in the 1930 Census living in Washington. See the record for Clotilde for further information in this regard. HOWEVER, these census records list a Mary A. STANTON as a sister, born in 1884, and yet James Monroe STANTON is said to have died in 1873. Either Clotilde made a mistake when listing the death-date for her father OR I've made an error when interpreting the Census records referred to in this note.
