Note: I, Samuel William Aylesworth, author of this family tree, descended from Daniel Perry Aylsworth. Daniel Perry Aylsworth was born Feb 14, 1811. For a time he was a merchant in Newburgh, Ontario. As of 1881 he was dwelling at Dorchester Station, County of Middlesex, Ontario. (Homer, p170) Very little information is provided by Homer regarding the children of Daniel Perry (see pp 328 and 329) and no information is provided regarding subsequent generations. Thus, the challenge will be to fill in this detail through our own research. Aylsworth, Town Clerk and an enterprising farmer, whose post-office is Dorchester Station, was born on a farm in the Township of Earnestown, Upper Canada, Ontario, in 1811, and is the son of Bowen Aylsworth. Bowen was a pioneer of Ontario, who came with his father Arthur Aylesworth [should read "Job Aylsworth, SWA], in 1778, and settled in Earnestown. Both father and son lived on the same farm all their lives. Bowen Aylsworth married Hannah Perry, daughter of Robert Perry, who came to Canada directly after the war of the American Revolution. To Mr. and Mrs. Bowen Aylsworth were born fifteen children, thirteen of whom lived to be over sixty years of age -- Benjamin, Job, David, John, Robert, Henry R., Elizabeth, Daniel P., Isaac B., Mary J., Sarah A., Peter and Mercy. Bowen was a prosperous farmer, and was the owner of 500 acres of land, which he divided among his children. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and was a man who took a great deal of interest in church matters, being steward, class leader and trustee for many years. He lived to be eighty-six years of age, as did also his wife. He was one of the best known men in the locality, and was universally respected. His son, Daniel P. Aylsworth, remained and assisted his father on the farm, until he attained his growth and received his education in the common schools. On November 22, 1835 he married Miss. Lucinda Fralick, daughter of Martin and Hannah (Hoffman) Fralick. To Mr. and Mrs. Daniel P. Aylesworth were born thriteen children, eleven of whom lived to be grown -- Ebenezer, Almeda H., Julia A., Mercy J., Amarilla M., William N., Richard P., Henry W., Mary E. and Lola A.. [This list includes only 10 names, not 11. Missing is Ida Matilda Aylsworth, who was living when her father died. Two sons died in their youth: Cephas Miller Aylsworth died at age 7 and Peter Aylsworth lived only three days. SWA.] After marriage, Daniel P. Aylsworth kept a general store at Newburg, Ontario for ten years ... to 1848 [Newburg is located near Napanee. Sir Allen Aylsworth lived in Newburg. See the book entitled "Rogues' Hollow: the Story of the Village of Newburgh Ontario through its Buildings", published in 1983 by The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario Inc, Toronto, Ontario.] In 1848, at the age of 37, Daniel and his family came to Middlesex County, and settled on the 1st Concession, Dorchester Township, south of the river, where he lived until 1880. In 1880, at the age of 69, Daniel and his family moved to Dorchester Station, and there [in or about 1889] he is now residing. In 1857, at the age of 46, Daniel was appointed Township Clerk, an office which he has held continuously every since, a period of thirty-three years, and to the general satifaction of all. He is politically as well known as any man in the township. He has been commissioned to take affidavits since 1880, and has filled the office of magistrate since 1883. He was Scretary of the Township for three years, and also filled the office of School Trustee. He, his wife and family are members of the Methodist Church, in which he has been Trustee and class leader, and to which he has contributed liberally. He has been a local preacher for over forty years. In his political views Mr. Aylsworth is a Reformer, and is liberal in his views on all subjects of importance. He is a many who has been closely identfied with the interest of the township for many years, and the universal respect of all acquainted with him. [Daniel Perry Aylsworth died in Dorchester Ontario on March 15, 1902, at the age of ninety-one. His wife Lucinda predeaceased him on March 21, 1893, at the age of seventy-seven.] ===== The following article appeared in the Napanee Beaver newspaper on February 2nd, 1900, under the heading: Old-Time Records relating to the Early Days of this Province, conducted by Thos. W. Casey: "DANIEL PERRY AYLSWORTH, ESQ. Mr. Aylsworth is the last surviving of the numerous sons of Bown Aylsworth and Hannah Perry ... [small section missing] ... and occupied by B. Aylsworth, M.P.P.. Many years ago he [Daniel Perry Aylsworth] he was one of those who were then deemed among the adverturous pioneers of Dorchester Township, in the vicinity of London, Ont., where he has ever since lived, and where he long occupied a prominent position in municipal, temperance and religious affairs. At the time he moved there [to Dorchester] the journey from Hamilton, nearly a hundred miles, must needs be accomplished over very rough wagon roads, and in many places there was scarcely a house or clearing for miles at a stretch. He has lived to see that become one of the best settled and most productive farming sections in all these provinces, and threaded in almost every direction by a perfect network of railways. He has seen London grow up from a comparatively small village to one of our largest and wealtiest cities, a great railway centre and a great commercial and manufacturing metropolis. Like his brother, the late Robert Aylsworth, of Odessa, he served his township for many years in the capacity of Township Clerk. When the writer last saw him, a few years ago, he was, we believe, 82 years of age and had then been the muncipal clerk for 28 years. He was still active and cheery and in the enjoyment of good health. Mrs. Wm. Bell, Morven [nee Mercy Aylsworth, daughter of Bowen], is, we believe, the only other surviving member of a once very active family of thriteen children." ===== The following NOTICE appeard in the Ingersoll Chronicle newspaper, Ontario, on March 17, 1902 (page 2, column 5) "PIONEER DIES SUDDENLY Squire Aylesworth [sic], of Dorchester Station Passes Away at 91 Years of Age D. P. Aylesworth, township clerk of North Dorchester for over forty years, was found dying in his bedroom, at Dorchester Station, Saturday, and passed away a few moments later. Death was due to old age. The deceased was 91 years old last month. We was around on Friday, and was remarkably smart for a man of his years. The late Mr. Aylesworth [sic] was one of the pioneers of the township, and was well and favorably known. In 1848, when he settled in Dorchester, there was only one small frame house at Dorchester Station, occupied by James Minkler, north of the river; while on the south side was Huffman's tavern and Cartwright's sawmill, where the grist mill now stands. He was a justice of the peace, a Liberal and a Christian Scientist. Mrs. Aylesworth [sic] died a few years ago. The family include Mrs. Shambleau, of Caradoc; Mrs. Adam Johnston, of Hamilton; Mrs. Howitt, of London; two daughters at home; Willima on the homestead, and Richard of London." ===== The following NOTICE and OBITUARY appeared in the London Free Press newspaper, Ontario, on March 19, 1902 (page 6): NOTICE: "The funderal of the late D. P. Aylesworth, of Dorechester, occurred on Tuesday, March 18th, from the family residence to the Union Cemetery, Dorchester. The obsequies were conducted by E. Wilson, C.S. B., of Hamilton. The casket was borne by Messrs. R. P. Aylsworth, Henry and William Aylsworth, sons of deceased; James Shambleau, John Molesworth and T. Howitt, sons-in-law." OBITUARY: "DANIEL PERRY AYLSWORTH, J.P. or Dorchester Station, Middlesex county, near London, died very suddenly at his residence on Saturday last [namely March 15, 1902]. He was the last survivor of the sons of Bowen Aylsworth, of Ernesttown, and a borth of Robert, David, Doctor I.B., Benjamin, John and Peter, at one time all well known and influential man. Of a family of fourteen children [of Bowen & his wife Hannah], the only survivor is Mrs. William Bell [nee Mercy Aylsworth], of Morven. The deceased [Daniel Perry Aylsworth] married Lucinda Fralick, a daughter of Martin Fralick, of Ernesttown, and a sister of the late Peter Fralick and of Mrs. Charles Smith of Ernesttown. She [Lucinda] died years ago, but several of her children are still living. One son, William, lives on the old homestead in Dorchester, and one, William, in London City. Two unmarried daughters resided with their father at Dorchester Station. Mr. and Mrs. Aylsworth removed to Middlesex country fifty four years ago [in 1948], when it was yet an all but unbroken wilderness. They went to Hamilton by steamer and then had to find their way across a new country to their home. Dorchester Station, now quite an old town, was then an incipient village of but two houses. He was a man of intelligence and activity in his day and a successful farmer. He was for over thirty years the municiapl clerk of his township [Dorchester] and seraved in that capacity up to the last, we believe. Though in his ninety-second year he retained his faculties, mental and physical, to a wonderful degree up to the last. He was in his apparent health when he retired on Friday night, and his family found him in an uncounscious condition in his bed next morning. He only lived a few hours after than. He was for years a Justice of the Peace, an active Temperance man, a Liberal in politics and a member of the Methodist Church." ====== NOTES: The graves and headstones for Daniel Perry and Lucinda Aylsworth are found in the Union Cemetery, Dorchester, Ontario.
