Note: A note regarding the birth date for Elizabeth Courtney LLOYD and the date of death for Charles LLOYD -- husband of Sarah VEAL and father of Elizabeth Courtney LLOYD and other children. Many tree posted on Ancestry.com state that Charles died in 1866 and that his daughter Elizabeth was born in 1868 or 1869. In attempting to find an understanding or correction for these postings, I completed a number of searches on April 17, 2017. My findings were: a) A picture of the headstone for Charles LLOYD Sr can been seen on 'Find a Grave' at: https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=25589769&PIpi=86046954 The person who posted this picture says that the death date shown on the headstone 1866. However, the headstone is very hard to read. To me it looks like 1856, which makes the problem worse, not better ? b) The 1921 Canada census indicates that Elizabeth was 52, and thus would have been born in about 1869 (which is what many others list on Ancestry.com) c) The 1931 USA census indicates that Elizabeth was 61 and living with her husband Frederick in Pennsylvania. He is listed as a Methodist Minister in this census. So, again, a birth date of 1869 is reasonable (and this is what the transcriber of the Census has listed) d) I then found an1871 Census Record listing Sarah (the mother of Elizabeth) and 4 Lloyd-children living with a James SHAW. Sarah is said to be 33 and James to be 21 (born about 1850). The Lloyd-children are David, Joseph, Charles Jr and Elizabeth LLOYD. Elizabeth is listed as 3 years old, suggesting she was born about 1868 (depending on what month the census was taken). Sarah (nee VEAL) is listed as Sarah SHAW and NO children are listed with the surname SHAW. This suggested that after the death of Charles LLOYD Sr., Sara remarried. e) The 1881 Canada CONFIRMS, I believe, that after the death of Charles LLOYD Sr., Sarah (nee VEAL) REMARRIED. The 1881 census lists that Elizabeth was then 13 and living with three of her brothers: David William, Joseph James and Charles Jr. Depending on the date of the census, Elizabeth would have been born in 1868 or 1869. These four ``LLOYD´´ children are living with a Francis SHAW (33, born about 1848) and his wife Sarah (38) plus 4 `Shaw-children´ ranging in age from 9 to 2: the oldest, F, is named Ann (I think), 9 years old, and thus born about 1871 or 1872. The other Shaw-children listed are: Sarah Agnes 7, Nancy Charlotte, 5, and Melicia/Melissa, 2. f) Thus, from (d) and (e ), we know that Sarah Veal was no longer living with Charles as of at least 1870 or 1871. So, had Charles Lloyd Sr died, or had he and Sarah separated? Regardless, the children were then raised within ``the Shaw family´´? g) I was also able to find a man named Francis Shaw in a number of earlier census records, born about 1845. This man´s parents were James and Elizabeth SHAW. In 1871, at the age of 22, he is still living with his parents and siblings in Carlton, Ontario. IF THIS IS THE SAME MAN as the man who later married Sarah (nee VEAL), then his full name was probably James Francis (``James´´ after his father.] Further, Sarah married James Francis in 1871, and had their first child in 1871 or 1872. h) If the same Francis SHAW is listed in two different 1771 census records, then he was `counted´ initially while living with his parents in Carlton, Ontario and then he was counted again later in 1871 census when living in Leeds Frontenac (is this around Gananoque), where he had met and married the widow Sarah (nee Veal) Lloyd. Alternatively, two different men are being listed in these census record. i) I found one family tree that says Charles Lloyd died in 1868, but NO SOURCES are cited. If you can provide any definitive information regarding the date of death for Charles LLOYD Sr, please contact me by email at saylesworth@shaw.ca. j) One possible resolution for all of this is: Charles died in 1868, when Sara was pregnant with Elizabeth. Elizabeth was born in 1868 or 1869. Within two years, Sarah was living with/married to James Francis Shaw. k) Given the many findings that confirm Elizabeth Courtney Lloyd was born in 1868 or 1869, it is unlikely that she misled others as to her birth date. Rather, the more likely conclusion is that her father Charles Lloyd Sr died in 1868 and that those who commissioned his headstone used an INCORRECT DATE for his death: they listed 1866 (or 1856), but it was probably 1868. HOWEVER, I have not found any vital record confirming the death date for Charles Sr. ; the only `source´ I have found is the picture of his headstone from the Cemetery in Gananoque.
