a. Note:   Obituary Charlie Thomas Powers worked as a cowboy along the Powder River and was an expert sheep shearer in Johnson and Sheridan counties. During the 1920s he owned and operated a pool hall and barber shop in Story for several years and in the 1930s took a shipment of sheep to New Hampshire where he managed the herd for the Coolidge estate. After World War II, he was an attendant at the Veterans Hospital and ran the evaporators at the Sheridan Holly Sugar Company for several years during the winters. He also owned and operated a small ranch south of Sheridan and was an experienced guide, dude wrangler, mountainman, fisherman, camp cook and story teller, specializing in stories about the Johnson County cattle war. He loved people and the outdoors. Mr. Powers, 95, died Wednesday in the Hot Springs Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis. He was born in Pipestone, MN a son of Edward and Ida Pearsons Powers. At about the age of two the family moved to Nebraska by wagon train and then settled in Buffalo where he attended school. He and his brother, Arthur "Toad", then homesteaded southeast of Ulm, and on June 1 1915 he married Daphne Geier in Sheridan. They lived most of their life in Sheridan and Johnson counties. Mrs. Powers died in August 1986, and he then made his home with his son, Gene. Survivors include three sons, Grover of Tucson, Ariz., Gordon of Loveland, Colo., and Gene of Greybull; a brother, Roy Gene Powers of Sheridan; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Champion Funeral Home with cremation to follow.
