Notes
a. Note:   , 3 days. She died on 25 Oct 1927 in White River, Mellette County, SD. Burial in White River, Mellette County, SD.
Evaline was the 2nd oldest child, and only daughter, of Thomas and Mary Powers. She married John Albert Brown in Centerville in December 1868. They eventually ended up near White River, SD in Mellette County. However, at least one child, Viola Laura Brown, was born on April 28,
1884 in Hutchinson County, SD according to birth records in Pierre, SD. From information provided by Evaline's great, great granddaughter, Lynda Lewis Wright it appears that the oldest
six children may have been born in Iowa and the remaining four children in South Dakota. Need to verify.
John and Evaline were still in Iowa in early 1882. Their son, George Thomas Powers, b. 8 Sep
1881 died 5 Jun 1882 in Appanoose County, IA. Their next child, Viola Laura was born 28 Apr
1884 in Hutchinson county, SD. Evaline's mother, Mary A. M. Barron Powers died in Appanoose county 11 Apr 1882. 1882 had to be a traumatic year for Evaline and her family. It is likely that
she took responsibility for her younger brothers (at least Robert Frank Powers and George Nathan
Powers) after her mother's death. From later records it appears that they went to SD with
Evaline's family, probably around 1883, give or take a few months.
On June 15, 2004 we verified the death dates for Evaline and her husband, John Albert Brown in Mellette county, SD. They are buried in the cemetery at White River, Mellette county, South Dakota.
In the 1895 Census of South Dakota, John and Evaline Brown (she was often referred to as Loretta, her middle name, or by Rhetta, her nickname) were listed as residents of Pratt county and the city of Chamberlain.
In the 1885 Territorial Census of SD, Evaline and her family were living in Hutchinson county, SD. They had six children at the time, the youngest (Laura, age 1) was the only one born in SD.
Note:   Cause Of Death (Facts Pg) on 25 Oct 1927 in Paralysis following cereboral hemorrage, 3 mos.
