Henry Perry Powers left home in Centerville, IA area when he was 21(1877) and moved to the community of Moulton, IA in the southeastern area of Appanoose county. He took up the shoemaker's trade and continued in that until 1889. At that time he began "reading the law" with W. F. Garrett until 1894. At that time he went to Drake University in Des Moines. He was admitted to the bar in 1895 and returned to Moulton where he practiced law and was involved in the real estate and insurance business. In the 1885 Iowa Census, Henry Perry Powers and Jennie Ogden Powers had two teenage boys in the household. They were Theodore and Emmett Powers. Theodore was 16 and Emmett 14 (according to the Census, however their actual ages were slightly different). They were younger brothers of Henry Perry Powers. The mother, Mary A. M. Barron Powers (wife of Thomas Powers) had died in 1882. By 1885, at least, these two boys were living with Henry Perry Powers.
Henry Perry Powers first wife was Jennie Ogden. She died in 1903. In 1904 he married Mora Adel Probasco. She had previously been married to a Tom Neill.
