Note: nson County, SD. He died on 03 Sep 1959 in in a car wreck 7 miles east of Delmont on old Hwy 18.. Burial on 06 Sep 1959 in Pleasant View Cemetery, Hutchinson County,South Oak Hollow Twsp, sw of Tripp, SD [46]. Fact 1 in killed in a car accident east of Delmont, coming home from Mitchell. Fact 2 in buried in country cemetery SW of Tripp, SD. Robert Frank Powers, known in his adult life as Frank and also went by the initials, R.F. He homesteaded on the farm on which he spent the rest of his life about 1895. We have documents that indicate he completed payment for the land in 1902; also a land patent that was issued that same year. The BLM Serial Number is: SDMTAA 027057. It was the sw quarter of Section 12 in Choteau Creek Township, Charles Mix County. Robert's first wife was a Mary Willi. I have a certified copy of their marriage certificate that was issued in Hutchinson County, SD. Ron's Uncle William Harry Powers (who was always known as Harry) and Robert Clark Powers were the surviving children of that marriage. Three other children, Lewis O, Ralph E. and Laura E. died between the ages of a few months to about 10 years of age. They are buried in the Pleasant View cemetery, in Oak Hollow Township, SW of Tripp (4 miles north and 2 1/2 miles east of where Claude Powers lived. Or, 12.5 miles north of the intersection of Hiway 50 and Bon Homme County #11, at the west edge of Avon, and 1/2 mile east). Frank's 2nd wife was Flora Belle Marvin. They married in 1905. There were 4 children from that marriage. The 2nd born of that marriage was Claude Marvin Powers, Ron's father. Flora was killed in a car accident at a T intersection west of Dimock, SD when Frank and Flora were returning to their home after having been to Mitchell SD for the annual Corn Palace celebration. We have a certified copy of her death certificate from Hutchinson County, SD. This was September 26, 1941. Ironically, Frank was killed in a car accident September 3, 1959 on his return from Mitchell SD. We know that Robert Frank, and his brothers George, Edward, Walter Thomas, and Hiram William Powers all migrated from Centerville IA (the place of their birth) to the west. Frank, George and Hiram settled in SD (I have records of land patents for all three of them), Walter Thomas settled in Cherry County NE and Edward made his way to Wyoming at least by 1894 (records indicate his oldest son was born in Wyoming during that year). Also have land patents for both Walter and Edward. Walter homesteaded on 480 acres in Cherry County NE and Edward homesteaded 160 acres in Johnson County Wyoming. Detailed information regarding the property owned by Robert Frank Powers in Sections 11 Choteau Creek Township, Charles Mix County. 1. Have document that shows conveyance of the SE ¼ of NE ¼ and the East ½ of the SW ¼ of Section 11 and the SW ¼ of the SE ¼ from Birt and Anna Chamberlain to Charles H. Hayward by Warranty Deed on the 8th day of August, 1902 and filed the 19th day of November, 1904. 2. Also have documents (Warranty Deed) conveying the South half of the SE ¼ of Section 11 from Charles H. Hayward to Robert F. Powers on the 19th day of March, 1908. And, a mortgage note for the same property for $700 (plus a second mortage of $1500) on the 6th day of April, 1908. The rate of interest was 7%. A final document that notes completion of all payments for this property on the 24th day of February 1912. 3. Also have document showing that Robert F. Powers rented the NE ¼ of the SE ¼ of Section 11 (noted in blue) from Susan Hawkeagle (of the Yankton Sioux Tribe) on the 12th day of December 1914. The lease was in effect through March 1, 1918. The 40 acres included 32 acres of cropland and 8 acres of grassland. The rent was $20 for the first two years and $50 for the last two years. The surety bond was signed by Theo R. Deurmier and Charles Uecker. Lease was renewed in 1918 at cost of $100/year. 4. Have fee simple patent issued to R.F. Powers for NW ¼ of SE ¼ of Section 11 (in green). Issued May 19, 1926. Also found a document indicating that R. F. Powers bought Lot 15, Block 3 in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Hutchinson County on the 21st day of December, 1898, for $3.00. It is likely that this was done in connection with the death of he and his wife Mary's infant daughter, Laura that died in October of that year. On another document, the guarantee of the burial vault at the time of his death (September 1959), the cemetery is also referred to as the Layton Cemetery (There are Layton's buried there). Have a listing of all people buried in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Oak Hollow Township, Hutchinson County, SD (R61, S28), northeast corner of NW quarter. This listing was originally done by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) graves registration, 1940 and made available on the internet by GRHS Village Research Clearing House Cemetery Project in cooperation with the SD State Historical Society. List includes the following Powers: Lawara (which is interpreted to be Laura E.) Powers, 1898 at 5 months of age. Her middle name is Edith. Mary Powers (Mary Willi Powers), 1st wife of Robert Frank Powers, March 1903 @ 29 years of age. Rolph (interpreted to be Ralph) Powers, 1907, @ 8 years of age. Ron's father indicated that Ralph died after having been kicked by a horse. Lewis Powers, 1904 @ 7 months of age. Jones Powers, 1901, @ 1 year of age. No other family records reviewed to date (5/2/03) have included a Jones (or James) Powers. An inspection of the grave sites for the family in May of 2003 did not reveal such a stone. There was a son, Robert Clark Powers, born in 1901, so it is likely that the notation of a Jones Powers is an error. Robert Clark Powers son, Clifford Claude Powers, indicated that his father had never mentioned any other children except the three (Laura, Ralph, Lewis) that had died in childhood. He was a rural mail carrier and used to deliver the mail to Claude and Fern Powers as well as Robert Frank Powers and his wife, Flora Belle -- Don's sister] Powers death brought the 1950 traffic toll to 141 as compared to 168 at the same time last year.
